Employer is requesting medical necessity as they state this is elective surgery

My employer has said that i needed a letter of medical necessity from my doctor to have this surgery done as some people 'elect' to have this surgery. Strange thing is that I WORK for doctors....what can i do about this ....can they do this? I feel they are wrong to request this. Please Help!
