Design - How much imput did you have?

I actually been around this site for about 2.5 years and I finally decided on a "theme" I want to use. When contacting the designers do I get to pick which one to use? Do I get to decide on pictures, colors, borders & music? How close do you work with a designer to make the profile reflect your style? Can you change things later? Can you delete the design later if you don't like it and go back to the basic? Do you tip/pay these volunteers for their work? Let me know how your experience went. Thanks
