at what step in the process do you do the 24 hour unrine test

I just got the referral from my PCP, and she ordered up a bunch of test. The Lady at the lab already gave me the huge jug to fill up with urine. I'm not sure when i need to do this though because i thought this test was something that you do once you've already been approved for surgery. I thought it was a test they needed right before the actual surgery. Am I wrong?
