What exactly IS beef jerky? Is it an aquired taste??

I had read about beef jerky being a good, convenient source of protien. I had never tried it but recently had the chance to at a Sam's Club sample display. It was GROSS!! Kind of like seasoned shoe leather! It amazes me that anyone likes the stuff. Those who do eat it, have you always had a taste for it?
