Is an epidural ever used for open RNY?

When I wake up from general anesthesia, I am violently ill for about 24 hours. If it takes a normal person 2 hours to wake up, it takes me about 6 hours and even then, I am terribly groggy for several more hours. I am scheduled for surgery on Dec. 4th and would love to be able to have something other than a general anesthestic.
