Sore throat, five weeks post-op...what can I take to stop the coughing?

I am wondering what I can take to give me some relief from a sore throat and all the coughing that I have. I am afraid of getting a hernia from the coughing and my throat is killing me. I don't know what to take. Since it is Sunday I can't call my Doc, so I was wondering if any post ops could help. Can I take Ibuprofin or nyquil?
