What is the deal with the Gas and BMs smelling so bad, that you will suffer humility?

I'm having surgery within the next week, and I keep hearing of these awful gas and bm stories where relationships have been broken, or public humiliation was encountered, and it's freaking me out! who's gas or bm's don't smell bad? I'm sorry for sounding so graphic, but hey, I'm single and need some support and advice about this...
