Exactly what I meant to say. If you charge more for premiums for a larger BMI, offer surgery.  The guy I know that was going to have premiums raised for smoking was also offered a program of some type.

Something this made me think of was when I worked in a photo lab and let's just say that often times there are employees at some photo labs that um....partake of smoking weed.  I came in as manager and tripled the revenue in 3 years and was getting too powerful and being a woman that was a problem.  They hired this guy that I called the "hired gun" and he was a MEAN MEAN raging alcoholic.  He was sooooooooooo mean.  I of course was such a wimp and mothered these employees like they were my children and one time he made me fire a guy over nothing and I started to cry.  He screamed at me "Manager don't cry!!!"  That made me cry more of course and actually if I didn't cry at least 3 times a week, it was a slow week.  One day he gets it in his head that he wants to do drug tests on the printers.  (these people didn't operate any heavy machinery that would hurt anyone).  Some of the best printers we had would have tested positive because of weekend recreational use.  They didn't come to work stoned.  Anyway he decided he was going to do this and it was the one time that I got my muster up and said that it didn't seem fair to me that people that did an excellent job that were possibly using on the weekend could be fired but that others that got drunk off their butts every night would not be penalized.  I also knew the reason we were able to hire this previously high dollar employed corporate guy was because he had 2 DWI's.  I think between that comment and the fact that his testing would change the revenue of the company drastically...well he finally backed off.  I know that some of you may be very strict about the illegal aspect of this but he was sooooo MEAN and was doing to hurt people.  We had a turn over rate of 200% there.  Horrible nasty people that I felt like I had to work for because I was obese.  Boy am I grateful that I don't have to face those nasty people every day anymore!  WOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Suzy-

I was in this 'stage' until the moment Dr. Pain [I kid you NOT], the anethesiologist, put me out of my proverbial misery.  I'm pretty sure he recognized those -deer in the headlights-I'm gonna bolt off this table in two seconds--eyes I had going on and mercifully told me it was time to go 'night, night' -- mask on--lights out!!

Like you, I had no illusions.  Surgery has risks.  I had no comorbs [yet], was in realitively 'good' health, and a mom to four small kids. However, I knew I'd reached the breaking point.  I was no longer living, I was merely existing.  I hated it.  I hated watching life pass me by and being unable to participate in things with my family because I was fat, tired and in pain.

If you've done all your research, and feel 100% confident with your choices and trust your surgeon...ride out the fear...because when you wake up on the other side--it will be SO worth it.  Perhaps not initially, because early out is HARD.  However, when the weight starts falling off, the scale going down, down ... down and you feel like you are really living--it will be worth every moment.

Ok, there is a great book (it is HUGE) called "The Success Principles" by Jack Canfield who was co-creator of Chicken Soup for the Soul.  He has a thing called "overcoming belief with turn around statements"

Here's the process
1. My negative/limiting belief is __________.
2. The way it limits me is ______________.
3. The way I want to be, act , or feel is _____________.
4.My turnaround statement that affirms or gives me permission to do this is ________.

Example:
You say the negative statement "I can't do anything right, nothing I do is good enough, I'm not good enough"
The turnaround statement is " I can do MANY things right and each time I try something new, I learn something and I get better at it".

Book called The Magic of Believing by Claude Bristol says "The subtle force of repeated suggestion overcomes our reason.  It acts directly on our emotions and our feelings and finally penetrates to the very depths of our subsconscious minds. It's the repeated suggestion that make you believe"

I was talking to Sharon the other day about how powerful our subconcious is.  If you feed your mind with the turnaround statements, it will make such a difference at helping you avoid the stinkin' thinkin'.  There was a little commercial on TV that was the perfect example of this and I used it in a talk I did.  I've been needing to find an excuse to upload that video so I will!

Suzy, replace the stinkin' thinkin' with the attitude of gratitude.  Your subconscious brain doesn't know the difference between real and not so feed your brain the good stuff.  I promise, promise, promise this will make a difference.  I'm going to upload that part and get it up on you tube so you can see it.
hugs Y

Suzy, I'm so glad you canceled it because it only brings you down to their level.  That person is an unhappy person and the saying "misery loves company" means exactly that.  I've used this analogy so many times and please excuse me if I repeat myself but I look at it like we are walking a road toward our goal...not goal weight so much but that's part of it.  We are walking toward the thing we want most in our lives and when these little things pop up that are negative and mean you should just walk on by and don't veer off course because you are only allowing them to rent space in your head.  They are either looking for a reaction or they are saying something that they believe will make them popular with others.  Putting someone down to make yourself look better is never a reason to do it.  It is the basis of all prejudice and bigotry.  In my recipe for life I talk about that you never know what someone else's journey is until you walk in their shoes.  Don't we have enough work to do on keeping our side of the street clean than to put someone else down?  Carnie has struggled but you know what?  If Carnie hadn't been so public I wouldn't have had the surgery.  She saved my life because I was truly on my way to finding a way to check out.  The pain was too great.  I had lost my mom and she was the most beautiful, kind, gracious and angelic being this earth ever lost and she loved me no matter what size I was.  I was angry when she was taken and I took it out on myself and I ate more than I ever did and I didn't care if I lived or died.  Thanks to Carnie I am not only alive but thriving and then on top of that I am paying it forward to help others that want to live!  She started this little ripple in a pond that became a wave that turned into a tsunami called Yvonne the weight loss surgery advocate.

The other thing is....when people are cruel and nasty, they don't realize that they are sabotaging their success.  A mean, nasty, unhappy person stresses their body and guess what that does?  It throws your body into starvation mode and it hangs on to every calorie with a vengence.  There are a few that are thin that are mean but I think you'll find that many of the more vocal negative post-ops are not successful in any aspect.  So when you see the crappy, negative stuff....change channels because the moment you allow it to raise your blood pressure, you will hurt yourself.  You can be compassionate by thinking "Thank God I don't have to live in that person's head" and then move on and find a post you can contribute to that is positive.  It works I promise!
hugs, Y

I am proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with you and we'll make the biggest army possible to stand between you and your food.  I have always described it like a line of us walking hand in hand with the vets in the front reaching back for the medium post-ops and them reaching back for the newbies.  The vets pass on the info to those behind them and they keep passing it down the line.  And we do it together....we may come from all different walks of life but we are all beautiful and blessed children of this earth.  We are all one.  Actually one of the things I love about getting together for events are watching people sit in a room with types of people they would never otherwise come in contact with and guess what?  They find out they are people too.  We have a lot of black and white thinking in our group.  You can judge someone over one little thing and then just throw the baby out with the bath water. I always say  "If you don't like a certain thing about someone, don't worry about it, you don't have to marry them".  We need to learn what we can and then learn to celebrate our differences.  You cannot imagine how often it happens to me.  I had a lady tell me that even after reading some of my posts that she saw my picture and she just assumed that I was a "blonde skinny *****".  She apologized to me and said she was sorry I was wrong.  The beauty of this group is that members get to know me and they get to know my heart.  I might be blonde and I might be skinny but I really believe ***** does not describe me...not because I'm nice....but because I'm a too much of a wimp to say much to anyone!  Thanks for your input!

So true what you said Traci!!  Suzy, have you been introduced to that term? Stinking Thinking?  I'm going to add a post about "overcoming limiting belief and replacing with turnaround statements".

It's hard to be positive when we've had so many years of that "Stinking Thinking" but part of this journey is learning to turn the negative into positive and learning how to be kind to ourselves!

I think it's generally a good idea to have BOTH a carrot and a stick.

If you're gonna penalize someone for smoking, offer them a way out.

If you're gonna penalize someone for being fat, offer them a way out.

Otherwise, how fair is it?  Particularly when you KNOW how hard it is to change either of these situations.............

Makes me sad.
