Topic: RE: Afraid of dying

Hey CF it is so normal to be nervous for So Many Reasons.  Getting put under was the scariest for me.  I actually looked forward to the afterward of the surgery. I was much more frightened about getting put under for  my total hip replacement (6-2-09) Than I was for my rny.

As for complications afterwards; you look like a young healthy woman, I beleive you chances of complications are minimal.  Follow your care plan to the "T" Like you've followed no other plan.

Use this time to start working your food program, and to start "Visualizing" how you want your new life (and Body) to look and feel. Focus on what "WILL BE" not what "could be".

Be Well

Topic: Choose Life!

Trudy sent me this, I don't even really know if this particular person exists, but I still want to be Just like him. I am sorry I do not know who the author is though....

________________________________________________

John is the kind of guy you love to hate. He is always in a good mood and always has something positive to say. When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, 'If I were any better, I would be twins!'
He was a natural motivator.

If an employee was having a bad day, John was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation.

Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up and asked him, 'I don't get it!'

'You can't be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?'

He replied, 'Each morning I wake up and say to myself, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or...you can choose to be in a bad mood

I choose to be in a good mood.'

Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or...I can choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it.

Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or...I can point out the positive side of life. I choose the positive side of life..

'Yeah, right, it's not that easy,' I protested.

'Yes, it is,' he said. 'Life is all about choices. When you cut away all the junk, every situation is a choice. You choose how you react to situations. You choose how people affect your mood.

You choose to be in a good mood or bad mood. The bottom line: It's your choice how you live your life.'

I reflected on what he said.. Soon hereafter, I left the Tower Industry to start my own business. We lost touch, but I often thought about him when I made a choice about life instead of reacting to it.

Several years later, I heard that he was involved in a serious accident, falling some 60 feet from a communications tower.

After 18 hours of surgery and weeks of intensive care, he was released from the hospital with rods placed in his back.

I saw him about six months after the accident.

When I asked him how he was, he replied, 'If I were any better, I'd be twins...Wanna see my scars?'

I declined to see his wounds, but I did ask him what had gone through his mind as the accident took place.

'The first thing that went through my mind was the well-being of my soon-to-be born daughter,' he replied. 'Then, as I lay on the ground, I remembered that I had two choices: I could choose to live or....I could choose to die. I chose to live.'

'Weren't you scared? Did you lose consciousness?' I asked.

He continued, '...the paramedics were great.

They kept telling me I was going to be fine. But when they wheeled me into the ER and I saw the expressions on the faces of the doctors and nurses, I got really scared. In their eyes, I read 'he's a dead man'. I knew I needed to take action.'

'What did you do?' I asked.

'Well, there was a big burly nurse shouting questions at me,' said John. 'She asked if I was allergic to anything 'Yes, I replied.' The doctors and nurses stopped working as they waited for my reply. I took a deep breath and yelled, 'Gravity''

Over their laughter, I told them, 'I am choosing to live.. Operate on me as if I am alive, not dead.'

He lived, thanks to the skill of his doctors, but also because of his amazing attitude....I learned from him that every day we have the choice to live fully.

Attitude, after all, is everything.

Topic: What is your anchor?
Why Charting Your Course Begins with Dropping Your Anchor by Katie Jay, MSW, Certified Wellness Coach
Director, NAWLS
www.nawls.com

It's nice to have an anchor.

If you're a boat, an anchor means you have complete freedom to sail wherever and whenever you want, but when it's time to stay put, you have a safe harbor.

The sailing analogy works well for weight loss surgery patients, too. I use the metaphor all the time when I talk about being the captain of your own ship. However, I seldom acclaim the "anchor" when I speak on taking charge of one's own life.

If you're a WLS patient, an anchor means no matter how much we waiver from our WLS programs on any given day, there are some tried-and-true options for us that will help keep us on the straight and narrow. Your anchors will always bring you back to a safe place when you go off plan -- and we all do from time to time.

Here are a few of my personal anchors that I rely on when I'm particularly tempted or veering off course:

Don't mess with my breakfast.  For me, starting off my day right is easy and tasty. I love cheesy eggs; they're good for me, so I have them every morning. I prefer the consistency in my day, and I don't feel deprived. While I may occasionally veer off course later in the day, this first meal always gets me back on plan.

More than my feet hop on the scale. Some people feel overwhelmed  weighing and measuring their food. For me, I find it comforting to know with certainty that I am sticking with my plan. When I am home and able to use the scale with relative ease, I do take advantage of this tool in my own WLS program.

Always plan for a Plan B. This is especially true when you find yourself talking into the metal box at a drive-thru restaurant. If you have a disaster plan set in stone before you pull up, then you'll know what to do when you get there. A certain fast food restaurant, for example, offers chili and a side salad. For me, this menu choice is better than most, and has consequently ended up in the fine print on my contingency plan.

You'll need to tweak your own plan so it works for you when you are tempted or eating at a restaurant.   I would encourage you to take some time and think about the anchors in your own program. Let me know what you discover and how well they are working for you.

So glad to hear from you!  I think we are all just sisters under the skin.  (Loose skin, but that makes for more room for more sisters - LOL!)

So glad things are going so well for you, too.  Ain't life grand these days?

Many, many big hugs!

KATHY!!!!!

WOULD YOU BELIEVE IT???

We are still right on the same track!!! Just a tiny bit ahead on the weight...[149]- no doubt because of you having surgery and not being able to exercise.
I'm also wearing 4/6 jeans!
sm/med tops. hair is doing much better- not losing.
Breath-- well that depends on what I ate ...
(I love my sardines & herring oy)
What can I tell ya my Dad grew up in the Bronx!

No Cpap for me either! how delightful is that?

Clothes - I made it thru winter with things belted and buttoned up. Good to be able to wear a couple of sizes to large that way. But as warmer weather approached I had started to get a bit concerned about how I was going to replace every seasons wardrobe.

But- things work out - one way or another-
sadly a friends Aunt passed away after having enduring a number of months cancer treatments.

Since she had no children, my friend was left the task of going through all her things and cleaning out her home. I received boxes & boxes of clothing. Talbots, Pendleton, Kasper, Anne Taylor,London Fog... BEAUTIFUL things that I'd never be able to afford. Oh sure, a piece now and then on super deep discount... but never like this...
A regular fashion show right here at home.

while I feel badly about her loss of her dear Auntie, I KNOW when MY Aunt die many years ago... it gave me great happiness to give away her things to people who would use & appreciate them. Now its my turn to be on the receiving end.

Just last year another friend had offered me things that belonged to her Mother in law - sizes 16/18  THEY were too SMALL for me.
My friend felt worse about it than I did. Now i'm fitting into anything from a 4 to a 10/12!

REALLY not getting hung up on the NUMBERS!
I kept a couple of nice fall/winter blazers in the larger sizes so that I can put a bulky sweater on underneath! Hey... I'm feeling the cold more now!

Same ol husband- very much happier to put his arms around me now!
Guess i'll keep him!

So glad things are looking up for you!

Do keep in touch.
