WLS Success-through Powerful Positive Attitudes
A Quick Check In
Yes Indeed! When the blood sugar hits the 40's it really is awful!! I feel that the "Reactive Hypoglycemia" is more of a new concept. When I had my surgery which was only 3 years ago, I never heard anything about RH or even just hypo at all. I've actually been doing pretty good with it lately. I think the lowest I've had was a 67. Just low enough to be uncomfortable but not dangerous. I've been testing my blood sugar A LOT. Especially about a 1/2 hour after I eat. If it's high (over 180) then I know it's going to drop pretty low in about 2 hours, so just before then I eat something, a carb and a protein. I do find that doing this has me eating more times a day than I am used to, so I just eat smaller amounts at each sitting. If my blood sugar does not go way up then I prolly won't have to worry about it.
I also bought some glucose gel, the pack came with 3 tubes so I have one next to my bed, one in my purse and one in the cubboard. So if it should get really bad I do have a 'quick fix'.
You are so right about the necessity of more discussion in the bariatric community by both patients and their medical providers
