WLS Success-through Powerful Positive Attitudes
Benefits of exercise!
Just thought I'd share this... mainly because I'm proud of myself, but also to hopefully inspire others.
I am still pre-op, but wanted to start my exercise regime up before I had my surgery. The reason was two-fold: First, I wanted to be in the best physical shape I could be in under the cir****tances going into surgery and second; I figured the surgery and new eating habits would be a big enough change to my system without throwing exercise at it all at the same time!
I started going to the gym on November 10th. The trainer did all of my measurements and did all these calculations that showed how badly out of shape I am. She redid them on December 18th and I was totally floored! Though my BMI had only gone down 1 point, my Body Fat % had gone from 67% to 49% and I'd lost two and a half inches. It's funny... I started out where I couldn't do the elliptical machine for more than a minute before I would have to stop and rest. I can now go 25 minutes at varying intensities! The same with the arc trainer... I'm up to 25 minutes. I can walk a mile on the treadmill in 17 minutes, which beats the 20 minutes 47 seconds that I started out with! I've tried running on the treadmill, but I'm not there yet.
I've lost 20 pounds and though I can't see it yet, I was so excited to see the difference on paper! It has totally inspired me to continue going to the gym. The holidays kept me from the gym for two weeks and Monday night was my first time back. I missed it and felt TOTALLY guilty for taking those two weeks off! I am working with two different trainers (one male and one female) and go three nights a week.

Krysti,
Way to Go !!!!!! I was also away from the gym for 2 wks and Monday was my first day back. You are doing great. I made the mistake to start jogging on the treadmill and frigged up my knee again. Those two weeks off actually helped because I can now go back on the treadmill but walk briskly. You are going to be so much better off doing this now before surgery. Keep up the awesome job !!!!

Krysti - That is absolutely wonderful that you've begun your new lifestyle with an exercise program! I was so out of shape I didn't even attempt to start until quite a few months after surgery. Good for you!!!
It will certainly help you in the long run.
I couldn't go from my car to my back door steps without huffing & puffing. My feet, my hips,my back- basically everything hurt to some degree. Since I had such a long liquid diet prior to surgery I just wanted to concentrate on that and worry about real strenous exercise till later. ( I did Medi-Fast for a month!!!) Prior to the Doctor ordered Medi-Fast I basically did a modified Atkins diet for month- 6wks.
I did lose a good amount before surgery so I was happy with those efforts.
whatever a person choses to do prior to surgery to begin on that new way of living- being committed to it are all steps in the right direction.
Believe me- last May when I walked into the surgeon's office for the first time... I couldn't have dreamed being about 30lbs away from goal at this point!
Before you know it- You will be there too!
