A good leader and an educated leader.  If they aren't aware of the psychological aspects of our disease they won't totally understand how to help.  They also have to know how to deal with politics.  I do think it is really important to be part of some support group even if it's online.  I'm so glad you're going and so glad you're here too sweetie.

I am new to this support group and would have to agree with Yvonne. I also know that we as Members contribute to the success of the group based on our experience, strength and hope; as well as, the solutions that we share and the positive example that we set for others.  It is exciting to be a part of this group.  Kattro

Kattro... You are so right it is exciting to be part of THIS group! shared experiences, strenghts, hopes -- solutions... so important to our continued success.

I think there is a way to share the "negative" aspects that we experience by sharing what we learned or how we coped.  And that does provide a positive example for others.  Members contribute so much to the success of the group... Just look at all the responses to this question!  So much more interesting when OTHERS participate.

No need to hold back. We love to hear from everyone!

Absolutely there is a way to share negative things!  Truly the only thing I care about is that we don't get into name calling.  I still get a knot in my stomach when I read the cruel things on the boards.  I can't believe it's gotten to that and I'm not sure it will stop unless the majority stands up against the minority bullies.  I just love you guys!!!!!!!!!

I quit going because I got frustrated with people trying to justify not following their doctor's orders and trying to convince everybody else that they were different and wouldn't need to do it.  They go into surgery trying to figure out how they can bypass the system.  It really wasn't enough support for me.  This site is much better, I can read it if I want or chose not to.

Sally... You have that right! I've seen a few like that. In fact, my friend's son came out of surgery and started bragging to me about how he can eat everything.... & drink with meals... no dumping... no foamies... he thinks he is doing just great.

THESE RULES ARE NOT FOR ME! I AM THE EXCEPTION!!!

I just look at him and told him to be careful.
Guess what... his blood sugar was extremely low and he passed out!-
Now what if he had been driving at the time? He could have killed someone or himself!
Hope he learned his lesson.

I used to do a talk with power point slide in it that said. "Only on Tuesdays and Sundays".  What I prefaced it with the lady that told her family she couldn't eat certain foods and then she starts slipping up.  When her family says "I thought you weren't supposed to eat that" and she says "Well I went to support group and they said I can eat it only on Tuesdays and Sundays".  Meaning that we as addicts will make up stuff to slide by the rules if we are allowed.  There's a wonderful lady (one of our members) that thanks me for telling her family all the stuff ahead of time so they can help support her.  Education of the whole family is so important!

Oh Sally, that's so sad when that happens.  It is true that in every area of life there will be people trying to find the loop holes.  I think you are very smart by surrounding yourself with the information that helps you, uplifts you and doesn't drag you down.

(This is in response to Yvonne- for some reason it didn't post there)

oooo politics & personalities.... one of the last groups I attended one NEW woman seemed to totally take control of the session... it was a drag. She seemed to want to impress everyone that her husband loved her no matter how obese she had become and that she was looking forward to fitting into his many sports cars! *****ally cares?
All this while the leader had said... to briefly INTRODUCE YOURSELF.
3 members had to wait until she was done congratulating herself on the amount of money they had and what a terrific cook she is.

THAT said... it was my only Bad experience at group. Wish the leader had regained control and allowed the other new people to have a share before this woman got so involved in herself.

Maybe she was/ is totally INSECURE!

the nice thing about online ... you can tune out!
