2 Months out and feeling...

I think that I have hit a roadblock. I am not as happy as I thought I would be, might even be depressed. I want to be happy I just don't feel that way. I hate having to put together the menu for the week for my family. I am not really eating that much and don't care to. I am tired of seeing the commercials for weight loss surgery too! I am glad I did it and grateful but now that I have done it I don't wanna hear about it any more. I just feel real melancholy. Is this normal?
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Miranda- I'm sorry you are feeling so down in the dumps. so many things can have a bearing on our day to day feelings...

for one thing- as you know- this surgery turns a woman's hormones upside down- and they can be tough enough to deal with on a good day!

the fact that you have to still plan & prepare nutritious meals for your family when you are so restricted can be a real challenge.

Perhaps, for now you could try to suppliment your meals with some protein shakes so you are getting the proper nutrition. plus the shakes count as fluid volume... to keep you hydrated. It is very important to stay hydrated.   have you been taking your vitamins as you should?  If you are low in the B vitamins our moods can be severly affected.

Back in the day-- my childhood friend & would get together as adults for Tea & "B"- not to mention a shoulder to cry on if need be.  Is there someone you have close that is understanding and can give you a little extra moral support?

So yes i'm afraid feeling down can be a normal part of this HOWEVER-
you won't always feel this way. Better brighter days are ahead- we just have to keep plodding along one foot in front of the other and we will reach our destination!

Hope you feel better soon....

Hi Miranda-

We all tend to have roadblocks along the path of our weight loss journey so know that you are not alone!  We are here to help and can relate to your frustrations/aggravations on different levels.  Remember everything comes with time and this is a huge lifestyle change that you have committed yourself to.  It's ok to feel frustrations along the way.

Have you tried asking for help with preparing meals for your family during this difficult time?  Do you have anyone in your home who is willing to make dinner a few nights throughout the week?  How about friends/family close to you that can prepare meals and bring them over?  What is it that you need to help you with this roadblock at this point in time?

What do you enjoy doing that makes you happy?  Do you have a hobby? What would happiness look like to you in this moment?  Take a few minutes to reflect on what you need to make you happy and get you through this bump in your journey..

I hope this helps :)

I'm so proud of all the great answers but you are feeling normal.  Are you going to any support groups?  Are you doing anything enjoyable at all?  I know you may not feel like it but this is the time to try to change everything regarding the way you are thinking of yourself.   We use food to self medicate and when we can't, we are forced to deal with the anxiety.  We start saying more things to ourselves, beat ourselves up and feel bad but we don't have food to help us deal.  You said a couple of things that tell me that you are right where many of us find ourselves....we look to something else to make us happy...like getting the surgery or losing the weight.  It's almost like postpartum depression where you look forward to having a baby but when the baby comes, it's a lot of lost sleep and work and nobody's hanging around celebrating anymore because the baby has already arrived.  Your hormones are going nuts too.  That's why you're tired of seeing the commercials because it reminds you that things aren't perfect.  The surgery cannot make us happy BUT it can make life much more manageable and happier because we can do so much more and not be so unhealthy.  Do you have some time to read my blog?  I have a lot of this information there.  Let me see if I can find some particular posts but it is really important to start reprogramming your brain to the happiness setting that was always there but you just didn't allow it.  Starting the morning with a grateful list can help.  Try not to get into the negative zone of thinking that include anything like guilt/blame/shame/judgment of yourself or others.  It will start to even out....come to us....talk to us about what you're feeling.  OK sweetie??
hugs, Y
