Any Tips??

I was wondering if anyone had any tips for me as I prepare for surgery.  I am really not interested in a Mardi Gras Party (well not interested in the food portion of such a party).  My doctor does not require me to lose weight before surgery.  However, I am weaning myself off of all sugar (trying to anyway) as well as caffeine.  I'd prefer to not face those issues while I am recovering from surgery.

I started drinking isopure (the carb-free variety).  While it is too sweet for my liking, it isn't bad when poured over ice.

I am pretty tough but the one stupid thing that is psyching me out is the surgery prep.  I haven't been told what it is yet but I assume i'll have to down a bottle of that nasty salty frui****er laxative.  I had to do that about six years ago and i had to drink the castor oil and sal****er.  something caused me to immediately wretch and I know I must actually swallow it.  Maybe it was the castor oil...  anyways...any tips?

My surgeon told me that I get to start drinking protein within 24 hours of surgery so I am happy about that.  In fact, he REQUIRES it.

if u can lose weight, that would make the surgery easier. the more weight u lose, your liver shrinks and makes more room for your doc to see and move around in.  thats why i lost weight. i had to take a shower the night before with bedadine soap and again in the morning.  i also had to do the lax thing, but i'm sure what u will use will vary from doctor to doctor. take a pillow with you so when you go home u can use the pillow under the seat belt.  it helps the pain on your scar. i took a little grabby, reach thing and it was worth it's weight in gold. u can get them at a home heallth supply store. also a raised toilet seat for when u get out of the hospital. chap stick for in the hospital, just make sure it doesn't have petroleum jelly in it (because of the oxygen). have u already taken your classes?  i did one the day before my surgery.  this is all i can think of for right now, good luck to you. vick

Hello Vickie,

Thank you so much for your advice.  Yes, even though my surgeon does not require me to lose weight, i have placed myself on a diet.  I cut out all caffeine, sugar, simple carbs, and I increased my daily protein to a total of 80g rams. Yes, I attended the symposium but my class is the day of my pre-op (day before my surgery).  My surgeon wants me to drink protein beginning right after surgery.  He recommends  Syntrax Nectar.  It has zero fat and carbs.  I am drinking somethink like that already (IsoPure - carb free).

I think he normally has his patients spend two nights in the hospital.  Then I'll in a comfortable hotel (with a gym) for a week.

Regards,

Chris

chris, syntrax nectar is what i drink, i like the twisted cherry, but it might be to sweet for some people. you can get a syntex protein that can be added to anything because it is tasteless. i use it a lot. u just have to be careful not to put it into something too hot.  it is good you have put yourself on a diet, smart move.  are you having your surgery in mexico?  i was wondering because of the  hotel with a gym for a week.  lot of people go there.  i went to wichita falls, which is about 250 miles away. i now wish i would have used someone local. it is a pain in the keister to have to go to him for check ups let alone problems.  yet, i wanted the best i could get and he came highly recommended, where as the local doc was too new in the field for my liking..  good luck to you chris.  vick
