Yeah, "Calm down!" always works when someone says that to me. LOL!

Full disclosure: I've said it also with the same disappointing results.

119.2 - 47 degrees this morning The heated throw is great on days like this - Justice loves it.

Still tough to think about DS's reaction to DD's illness more than 21 years ago (I reflected on that while responding to Peps yesterday). I spoke to DS yesterday morning and by then he had calmed down and understood the situation. 2 of the 3 people he called are okay but he had an argument with the 3rd and doesn't think he owes an apology. He says they both overreacted, but she was reacting to him. Argh...

I am actually hoping tha****er aerobics is cancelled (she cancels if it is less than 55 out). Even with heated water, a cold wind is tough to deal with. I'd rather bundle up in dry clothes and walk Justice. I have golf tomorrow but will probably stick it out with extra layers on. We have bocce this afternoon. Just have to hope the wind isn't too brisk as it has really been howling around here.

And on the topic of warmth, I hope Paula and her DH have a phenomenal trip to Maui!

Have a warming Wednesday!

Interesting that it is a recognized trait. DS (and us) were taught how to deal with his anger in a pretty effective way all those years ago. He was told to walk away from the situation and stay by himself using calming techniques until he felt like he could come out again. His parents (us) were taught to back away and not try to interact until he showed us he was ready. That sounds simple but DH's first response to DS's anger was to get in his face and tell him to calm down which of course incited him even more.

When we told the younger children that oldest DD had cancer but was 90% likely to be cured, he got angry and was screaming over and over "I don't like that 10%". He went into his bed and screamed and cried for a while with his blankets over his head. When he calmed down the first thing he did was to call his sister. It still chokes me up that somehow he sensed it was going to end the way it did 18 months later.

I will pass on Baby Reindeer - neither DH nor I like the weird stuff.

In the educational setting those like your DS are often referred to as "students/kids/children with BIG feelings". When I started teaching kids with big feelings were dismissed as trouble makers or whiners. Now it is a recognized character trait and there are all sorts of books and therapies to help teachers learn to deal with those students. It's amazing that there aren't the number of self help books available for the adults with big feelings.

I know! We do from our parents but sometimes they aren't the best or we have kids very different from ourselves!

Ditto what DD said. Especially after seeing one of the actresses on that show won the Golden Globe last night.

Liz, that all makes sense to me. Despite the fact that we're all children and most of us are parents, those two identities and need sets and skill sets come in lots of different sizes. There are probably as many different kinds of parent/child relationships as there are relationships.

The wild thing to me is that nobody gets any training in how to be a parent.
