Maybe I didn't wait long enough?

I don't think she was necessarily planning to eat cake, but rather looking for something that could represent birthday cake as a celebration. We're so used to marking special occasions with food that when those special foods are no longer appropriate we don't quite know what to do.

I quite liked someone's suggestion of a moulded jello dessert. She obviously understood the OP's real question.

I'm going to be in a similar position next week and am making a lemon trifle for my friend's birthday. Rather than eat something that would interfere with my goals or feel sorry for myself, I'm planning to make myself a pretty parfait with yogurt and sf jello and enjoy the celebration.

My surgeon apparently is on the liberal side...day 8 he starts us on soft foods.  I did try a few things (scrambled eggs, ricotta bake, tilapia) but found right now, I am more comfortable with the full liquid stage. I'd rather play it safe.  Honestly, I don't feel like eating. It's a strange feeling.  I know it won't last!

I am just thankful I came along 18 months ago, when everyone was appropriately helpful, common sense ruled, and every word of wisdom was grounded in experience and science. OH was my only support group and because of the knowledge of the vets on here, I took all the tools they imparted to me and used them to my best advantage. It would be horrible to be at 18 months out and to still have 1/3 of my weight to lose. Because of the vets I lost every last pound I wanted to, and then some. I am eternally grateful to the vets on here.

I feel like WLS used to be more of a "I've tried everything else and failed" solution to WLS -at which point, people might have taken it more serious. Now, with all the advertising, the commerical/marketing aspect of it, the billboards, and docs pushing it to make money - it has become a routine "diet" fad. I see people here who havent had any serious diet attempts in the past, people who are absolutely clueless about basic nutrition/health concepts...they have no business having surgery in my opinion. And while im not 100% against it - having bariatric programs for children? Gees....

While I'd like to blame all the surgeons and liberal plans or lack of plans, I know I had no plan, no support from my surgeon or Kaiser in general, and I turned out just fine...but it's also because I did this to save my life and not to wear a size 4 pair of jeans. There is a huge lack of personal responsibity among a lot of people here - they dont take responsibility in any way for their obesity, and they dont take responsibility for their health as a post-op. People who think that they can rely completely on their docs for guidance or think their "nuts" would never steer them wrong and cant be bothered to learn, research and think for themselves- they are at the head of this train wreck thats happening.

Eh, the vast majority of people eligible for WLS still don't get it. It still around 1% only, which are really low numbers. So I don't agree it's even close to a routine solution.

What I think the difference is is that VSG is more popular so we're seeing a wider range of people getting it. When I got the VSG almost no insurance companies paid for it so you really had to be sure it was what you wanted. Most people who got it had really done their research and were realy dedicated. Not 100% but way more than now.

These days, you see those dedicated people still. But you also see people from the entire range of the spectrum of getting WLS from those who are doing it for vanity or on a whim to those who are serious but not very analytical and just get the type of surgery their program recommends without thinking too hard about it (or about what post-op life will be like) to those who do actually research to those who are obsessive about it all.

To give an example of what I'm talking about: I am always shocked when someone who got RnY posts soemthing to teh effect of "I have X disease (which basically can only be treated by NSAIDs) and my X is really flaring up. What can I take for it now that I have bypass?" I'm thinking: Really? You have a disease that makes getting RnY very, very problematic and you didn't think about that until AFTER you got cut up? Really???

Well now people who go through life operating like that are getting sleeves too! (Though luckily they can still take NSAIDs ) But there are other questions they never thought to ask as well, just different ones.

I have to admit that I NEVER in my life tried any serious dieting,  I did Weigh****chers twice in my life and that was the only diet I ever tried and both only lasted about 3 months before I said **** it and threw in the towel. I was fat and happy until I had kids and realized that I was going to end up dying before they grew up. BUT I am a bit of a neurotic so I researched and read, and read and researched, and when it came time for my revision I knew what I wanted because even while I was banded I kept up on the recent studies and research and knew what I wanted before I even needed it.
