When you say the book confused you girlie, what do you mean?

I think that since it was written for normies, the "diety" part of it, I do not put too much weight in, because my body just does not work like that, but I have found the blocking in/blocking out principals to be incredibly helpful.

Just was wondering about the part that was being confusing!

Bet we can get something figured out!  So many heads!

Yaay for heads!

Hey Brandilynn,

I found the types of food he recommends were the exact opposite of what I have been eating- he advises a lot of processed, low fat foods. Like the bran crackers and fiber cereals- in general I have avoided all cereals, breads, and crackers. And the fake foods like "zero calorie" syrup and chocolate sauce. Plus cooking with no oil, eating veggies steamed with no butter. It's pretty much the opposite of what I had been doing- whole foods, full fat, unprocessed foods.

It made me wonder if I had this all wrong. But isn't "low fat diet food" what made me fat in the first place? But what if he's right and all that diet food will fill me up more than what I'm eating? But wait, won't it just induce cravings? After reading it I was just confused. I actually decided to just do a liquid diet today and give myself a break from trying to decide on the whole low fat/high fat/low carb/high carb issue. I don't know what to eat and it's making me feel like I have no control and I'll be back to 250 pounds in no time.

It sounds like maybe you just liked the first part of the book and ignored his diet advice?

I DID just take the information from the first half and ignored the diet advice!

Low fat diet food DID make me fat!!  And I am never satisfied. Never never, never with the low fat diety food.

For me? I need to go moderate protein, higher fat, lower carb.

Maybe it could work for other folks (the way he describes) but crackers cannot stay in my house.  I obsess about what I can have with them until they are gone. :{  Not that you are that way, but I definitely am!  I even get all obsessed about Ezekiel bread!! ha!  Not even like cinnamon raisin  kind, but the freaking twigs and seeds kind!!

Maybe I oughta mention, when I mention the book that I am a fan of his boxing principals but I pay no mind to his diety recommendations!

That's a good point girlie!!

Rest your very brain today!  Maybe tomorrow will not look so overwhelming!  Hopefully!

Jen, are you still taking a PPI? I know that might seem like a simplistic answer, but since I still have severe acid issues, that's where my mind always goes! Acid definitely feels like hunger for me (and it didn't pre-surgery) so you might try taking one or upping your dose for a week or two and see if it makes a difference...

Other than that, I agree with what others have said...I can eat 4 oz of dense protein and frequently, that's ALL I eat for a meal. Then I'll have some veg for snacks during the day.

 Hi Lizanne,

I'm actually eating WonTon soup for breakfast right now, since you mentioned you liked it, I thought I would give it a try!

I stopped taking my Nexium after reading a lot of articles about how long term use can cause hip fractures, and now I'm only taking Pepcid.

Do you feel satisfied after eating just 4 ounces of protein? Lately I've been feeling like my stomach is full, but I'm still hungry and not satisfied. If I eat 4 ounces protein then wait 15 minutes and have a protein bar or scoop of almond butter, then I feel more satisfied. But it's too many calories!

Hi, Jen,

Most of the time 4 oz. satisfies me. I eat protein at meals until I'm pretty full and then, yes, it does hold me for 3-4 hours.

Are Nexium and Pepcid PPIs or acid reducers? I still have to take 2 (yes, two) prescription Protonix daily--what you are describing (stomach full but hungry/not satisfied) really does sound like the acid I have if I don't take the PPIs. And yes, PPIs do interfere with calcium absorption. I actually have also recently been diagnosed with osteoporosis (yuck) after 10+ years of osteopenia. I honestly don't think it's due to the PPIs,  though I'm sure they contributed--but it runs in the family and my younger sister (no wls) got it first. I am working with an endocrinologist and take extra liquid calcium to try to make up, but there's no way I can deal with the acid without the PPIs, unfortunately. Maybe you could get a prescription for Protonix and take it for a month just to see if that's part of the problem. Then, if it is, you could go from there and look at different ways to deal with it. Maybe you've developed a hiatal hernia--I did, post surgery, and Dr. Jossart fixed it--but couldn't fix the bad esophageal valve I have, so I'm kinda stuck. Of course, it may be that you just have more ghrelin/hunger, of course--I'm just throwing ideas out there!!

Hi Lizanne,

Pepcid is an acid reducer, not a PPI.

Well, I just took one of my Nexium in case that is the problem. I figure there is no use asking for advice if I'm not going to follow it! Maybe I should take it daily until I get back to goal, and not try to do without it until I'm truly maintaining again.

Another interesting thing- did you know PPIs slow gastric emptying? One of the main reasons sleeve patients get hungry so often is our stomachs are more muscular, and empty the food into the intestines more rapidly than a regular stomach. So the PPI may help keep you full not just from reducing acid, but also by keeping the food in your stomach longer.

I had a hiatal hernia repaired at surgery. How would I know if it had come back? Do hiatal hernias cause hunger?

Fingers crossed that it helps--I know they can take several days to become effective...

No, I didn't know that about gastric emptying--very interesting! I had a gastric emptying study done before I had the hernia repaired, and it was normal--but perhaps that was because I was taking both a PPI and acid reducer at the time!

If Dr. C. repaired a hiatal hernia at the time of surgery, I would be surprised if it had come back, but the only way you could tell would be to have an Upper GI or an endoscopy. They don't cause hunger, but they do let the acid back up into the stomach. Often the repair of a hiatal hernia gets rid of acid and the need for meds...but not always, and I am living proof, lol!

I have read articles, too, that suggest the PPIs are only part of the problem in the whole calcium absorption thing--that often people aren't taking enough calcium or the right type with the PPIs. So make sure you're getting enough D3 and calcium citrate while you're taking the Nexium!

Do NOT give your fear the power you are giving it.  Your posts about failing are NOT what you need.  This forum is GREAT because it is those of us further out.  I know for me I plan my meals maticuously and most "skinny" people that I know who HAVE to plan as well (not everyone can eat what they want when they want) they eat the SAME foods all the time AND they also plan many of their meals.

I say this to you because of how you WISH you could think of food less. Well OUR realiaty is that we CAN'T and the sooner you give into that and make peace with NOT being normal then the quicker you will move beyond it.

M-F while at work I don't HAVE to decide what to eat, because I have planned it and brought my lunch and I just know what I'll have xyz.

Can you give us an example of what you are eating?
