Type 1 Diabetes

ABOUT
Welcome to the Type 1 Diabetes support group! This group welcomes type 1 diabetics (also known as juvenile diabetes) who are considering or have undergone weight loss surgery. We hope to provide support for people who want more information on weight loss surgery and its consequences for type 1 diabetics.

Type 1 diabetes results from autoimmune destruction of insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas. The subsequent lack of insulin leads to increased blood and urine glucose. Type 1 diabetes is thought to be caused by genetic or environmental conditions - there is no cure, only a lifetime of insulin therapy. Unlike our Type 2 brothers and sisters, Type 1 can not be controlled solely through exercise and diet and no matter how much weight a Type 1 loses they will always need insulin.

Because there is so little information on Type 1 diabetics who get bariatric surgery in both medical publications and support groups, this group was formed to provide people with a resource of information and support.

Members please feel free to add any interesting articles, medical publications, stories and advice you feel would be helpful to Type 1s.
