I haven't noticed any changes yet, but then again... I am in the "healing" phase of my surgery, so there hasn't been much activity in 5 weeks. It feels like a LONG drought right now!

Spironolactone has helped me SO much with my body hair...especially arm hair...it's practically gone! I hardly have any leg hair or pubes either, lol (sorry if that's tmi!).  Not that I'm complaining but it's a little irritating to have so little leg hair (which can be shaved so easily) and SO MUCH HAIR ON MY FACE!!

I have awful sideburns that I had been waxing (religiously, every 4 weeks****il TODAY when I had my first electrolysis session! Yeah...it hurts and it's pricey but it's permanent and waxing there hurts like a motherf***er too!!  I also have a few whisker-like stray hairs (more every year, I think) on my chin, neck, and chest that I used to just pluck but am now having electrolyzed too.

I'm so excited about the electrolysis, guys. I've been wanting to do something about my hideous sideburns for about 15 years - more than half my life!

Hey all, I'm the third Jenny in a row here! I'm 27 and was diagnosed at 16. I had always had irregular periods but it took a smart dermatologist, of all things, to suspect PCOS and suggest that I see an endocrinologist. My pediatrician was not cutting it anymore. I saw a pediatric endocrinologist *****ferred me to a fertility doc. Whew! He was great and completely understood PCOS. Although he didn't really understand teenage girls - one day he came into the exam room and announced that I needed a vaginal ultrasound...and showed me the wand...I actually started to cry! LOL! I started on BCP and spironolactone and metformin. I transferred to a regular gyn when I was about 19. My symptoms have never been too terribly severe - my periods were controlled on BCP, so I never had problems with period symptons, cysts, or endometriosis. I did have a lot of excess hair and the darkening around my neck and between my boobs, plus of course the insulin resistance and belly fat. Spironolactone has actually helped a TON with both of those things. About a year ago my gyn decided that she didn't want me on tri-cyclic BCP anymore because my blood pressure was high and I'd been on them for ten years. So she switched me to the mini-pill - and thank God, no problems. I had vsg in October and have had a period literally like clockwork every 14 days since. Irritating but not a huge issue. My docs reassure me that it's normal and things will even out. I'm not married yet, so I haven't embarked on the TTC journey yet, although it's something I've always worried about because I definitely want kids.

I can totally understand why they have you on Yaz.  The hormones in the birth control pills do help keep the formation of cysts down and helps keep the lining for your endometriosis from growing out of control.  As for the Metformin that is needed if you're either IR (insulin resistant...and many PCOSers are) or type II Diabetic.  Metformin both reduces blood glucose levels and also makes the body more sensitive to the insulin that it produces.  To be tested to see if you need it all you need is a fasting blood test.  You'll need to have a fasting insluin level drawn to check for the insulin resistance and have a fasting glucose level drawn to check for type II diabetes.

Your fasting insulin level should be under 20 (I think...it's been a long time since I had mine done...but pre op it was 95 and post op it was 2) and your fasting glucose should be between 70 & 110.  Anything higher than a glucose of 110 will indicate diabetes.

Good luck!

Hi Juanita!  I'm also in California...have you checked out the Cali board?  Anyway I too had a lot of questions about PCOS (Dxed when I was 22 as well) and from the research I've done I've learned that not a lot of docs fully understand what it is...especially how it happens and that they are still researching it.  They are finding a genetic link as many times PCOS runs in families, kinda like diabetes & hypertension do.  Sometimes it seems to be a fluke thing (like me...I'm the only one with it).  Regardless at least you know now and can work on getting it under control.

GL with your surgery next month!  I forget...which one are you having?  I head up a WLS support group for women with PCOS on another website and I've noticed that the women who have the RNY seem to do better than those who've been banded.  In fact there are 2 ladies on there who are in process of getting a revision to RNY.  One lady has already been approved with her insurance (which is rare since many companies are limiting to 1 WLS per lifetime) and is having her revision next month and another is just waiting til her 2 year to begin the process to revision.  I'm 5.5 years post op RNY and am still 90lb down (from a max weight loss of 114lb) with 2 post op babies.

Anyway...GL!

Hate to have to agree but this is SO true.  Fat women... ignored... not just by society... but massively ignored by doctors.  I have not done myself any favors in this regard... did lots of research when we were TTC but have not cared at all since then... probably because I've not had too many problems.... but still, you have to look after yourself  because you seriously can't count on your doc to do it.  Sad  but true.

Topic: RE: WE MADE IT TO 50!!!
Hola,

My name is Kirstin and I live in Anchorage, Alaska.  I have known I've had PCOS for about 20 years...  I found out a little before I got married.  It's kind of wierd that it turned out this way because I always had this strange feeling that I would never have children.  Well that sort of turned out to be true.  We went all the way to IVF and although we got pregnant we had an ectopic pregnancy and then a miscarriage so that was a bust.  But, it was the road that led us to adoption for which I am eternally grateful...  so if any of you are struggling with the IF aspect of this lovely condition and need to vent or ask questions or whatever, you can talk to me!  I've been thru it ALL!!!

I have not had any problems with cysts for many years, probably 13 or so... I had three surgeries to remove cysts in rapid succession starting in '94 and the last was probably in '97...  I had to educate my doctor when metformin was the new thing...  so I've been using it for a very long time and I've been on a pretty even keel except for this darned weight issue...

Anyway I've been reading a few things about gals having a ton of problems with the PCOS following WLS and that started freaking me out a little and then I realized I could always get a hyserectomy if that happened to me but obviously that would be a last resort scenario.

I'm very interested in hearing about how everyone is doing post surgery... and especially if you are having trouble post surgery, were you having trouble before as well???  Or were you doing pretty good before???

My surgery is scheduled for March 23rd...  getting closer, starting to feel more real!  I'm very excited but of course a little frightened too!

Looking forward to getting to know you all!

Kirstin
