Michelle,
Congratulations on your new adventure! I have had PCOS for as long as I can remember and am getting sleeved a week from tomorrow. I have heard very positive things about WLS decreasing PCOS symptoms and increasing fertility. My husband and I spent a fortune on fertility treatments also, and I am feeling very excited to know that this is likely to help! How are you feeling after your surgery? Any thoughts or suggestions for the recovery period?

Topic: PCOS and VSG
Hi Everyone, I'm Michelle and new to the group and also have PCOS. I have meet several people online that have PCOS and had bariatric surgery and they are also reporting getting pregnant. My husband and I have been married 17.5 years and have spent over $60,000.00 in the past trying to get pregnant with no success. I decided that I needed a little more help to get the weight off and went to the DR. asking for the Lapband. that was 70 days ago. I was well informed and led to a different procedure called the Vertical Sleeve. Today I am 3 weeks post op and excited to get the rest of the weight off. I also had a Mirina IUD put in 2 years ago to help control the bleeding when the Metformin did nothing for me after 6 months. The IUD is a God sent. I will have it taken out in 2 years and we will once again try for a baby.

Topic: RE: Metformin question
Isn't this all FUN??? no.
Metformin is notorious for causing nausea, diarrea etc. and sometimes you have to work your way up slooooowwwwwly. I also was on 2000mg a day (pre-sugery) for the PCOS and cronic insulin resistance. My PCP has been telling me forever that the best thing I could do for the PCOS is to shut down my ovaries all together, stop the cycling & periods. I was very sceptical but I trust her so I had an IUD/Merena put in (OUCH!!!!!!!), not a treat to say the least, but being on the metformin I was still getting my period but with major cramps. Since surgery and no more Metformin I feel like a MILLION BUCKS!!!! No more low blood sugar, no more constant sweating, no more chroic fatigue/feeling crappy and so far no period.
My advice, if you're not interested in getting pregnant just stop your periods all together. This is polycystic OVARIAN syndrome so shutting down the ovaries would be logical.
Good luck!!!

I agree with the above poster...but also being 'fat' for so long, we're used to being invisible, but as thinner people we're less invisible and it a big adjustment and takes a while for us to become comfortable with compliments. It takes a while but you'll get used to them.
I know that even for me at 6 yrs post op I still have a hard time accepting compliments...

Of course there are other options for managing diabetes...PCOS or not. You might want to ask about Glyburide. I hope you feel better soon!!

Topic: Metformin question
ok so i was started on metformin in may and since then its been good and horrible. my period came back heavy and extra painful, but the horrible thing was it was causing major diarrhea.. i already have ibs and it made it from 3-6 number 2s a day to 20-25 i could no longer go anywhere, i tried camping for a week and spent the week in the bathroom and basically starved that way it had nothing to come out. i can eat something and then 10 mins later it was coming out.. ..
anyway to make sure it wasn't my vitamins doing it, i didn't think it was been taking them for years.. so i stopped everything even the metformin the only thing i kept taking is my birth control. and my bathroom visits have gone back down to the 6ish...
my does was suppose to be 2000mg per day so 4 pills a day.. i got to 1 and a half and it was awful then i was told by my doc to go back down to 1 pill and decided that i only go up to 2 pills a day instead of 4.. it was still horrible on the one pill.
anyway the question i have is, is there any other pill that will deal with PCOS and Diabetes, my doc put me on it mainly for diabetes and then secondary for my period and hormones etc.. I'm not trying to get pregnant but do have PCOS and type 2 Diabetes. I'm afraid i wont be able to stay on the metformin because its making the ibs thing real bad.. i just really want to keep my period and such and im afraid she will just put me on a pill for diabetes and ignore the pcos.
Thanks a bunch
Stephie

I think we as a society have become critical of ourselves. Parents especially seem to role-model being critical. It is so much easier to look at ourselves and think about the things we need to fix. I tell the girls I work with all the time that they should think of at least one positive thing about themselves everyday. I think another thing is the worry that you will start to sound vain if you are spending a lot of time being positive about yourself and your appearance.
