weightloss surgery with PCOS

I had surgery 3 months ago and I'm amazed at the changes!!!    I could not lose weight for the life of me before surgery.  Daily  I was on 3 insulin shots and 1 pill for my diabetes,  Metformin for the insulin resistance,  a pill for high blood pressure and for high cholesterol.  I'm off EVERYTHING now.   I've lost 60 lbs and I've had a period every month exactly when it was supposed to come (my friends just cannot understand how excited I am by that! lol)
I'm hoping maybe maybe maybe that means a baby in my future!  (tried unsuccessfully for nearly 18 years before surgery)
The main reason I had the surgery was to hopefully resolve the PCOS -  and I think it's done a fantastic job so far.  Would do it again in a heartbeat!!!
Good luck with whatever you choose!!

Exactly!  And even when I would have one,  I would NEVER know when it was coming because it would be 8 or 10 months in between each one.  I calculated I should start on the 13th this month if  I had a normal cycle and holy cow....  I DID!  It was wild!! lol.

Good luck with your surgery Teresa!  I know you're excited (and busy).  We'll be scootin' over on that old loser's bench for you shortly!   Can't wait to see you there

I had my surgery almost 11 months ago and I've lost 120 lbs.  It was recommended by my RE to have the surgery--actually, she said she wouldn't do anything until I did have the surgery.  I am still struggling with my eating habits and have been anemic and vitamin deficient as a result.  But I am still working on it!

I had my hormones tested in Sept and for the first time, they were in the normal ranges.  I am not 100% sure if this is because my WLS or because I've been taking BCPs continuously since last January.  I did take Met for 2 years which had absolutely no effect other than making my tummy unhappy.

I go back to my WLS Dr. next month and have to be released before I can start fertility treatments again, which considering my anemia and vitamin issues, probably won't be released as soon as I hope.  The RE said we could probably plan on starting in May or June, so I'm hoping on having a "hot" summer of baby making!  LOL!

Hi Jennifer ~

I'll toss my two cents into the ring - I had my RNY surgery in June 2009 - I'm down almost 130lbs since the surgery. The only change I have noticed in my PCOS is that I actually have a period. Like what everyone else has said its actually kind of amazing. Although unlike some mine started regular like clock-work about a month out from surgery. I still take BC because I believe (and that could be a head thing) that it helps to control some of the massive side effects I suffer from my period coming on. I am the text book case of PMS let me tell you!
However, some of the side effects from the PCOS that I hoped and crossed my fingers would change such as the facial hair haven't. For a while post op I was really losing the hair on my head I kept lamenting that I didn't understand why I couldn't loose the hair on my face the same way! I think to some extent it has thickened but it really simply could be that I just pay more attention to my outward appearance now then I did prior to surgery.
Even though I don't really see much change in my PCOS symptoms post-op I wouldn't change the choice I made to have the surgery. The overall body wise relief of being free of so much extra weight is amazing. I feel almost ALMOST normal.
Good luck in your journey - don't forget we are all here to offer support and advice if needed.
