Topic: RE: What do you do to break a plateau?

My dietician prefers to use the fat : lean muscle tissue ratio than to use BMI as a measure of success.

I started out exactly the reverse of what I should be at 75% fat! Now I am just 30% fat. Should be a little bit less but at my age and for my low level of exercise, I'm happy with that!

Happily banded since May 2006.  Regain of 28lbs 2013-14.  ALL GONE!

But some has returned! Up to 175, argh! Off we go again,

The US people seem to be told to take more supplements than we are (although I am banded not RNY so it is different for me).

Do they have artificial sweeteners like sorbitol? Excellent for bowel movements but oh the wind!!

Good old Marks and Spencers for me! Boring but they fit me. And lots of higher waisted ones. You can also get the Not Your Daughter's Jeans in the UK now (did you get them while you were still in the US?). Google for your nearest stockist.

I am a total media ***** so have managed a good relationship with the Sunday people and ITV news after the summer, so it might not be just the paper :)

It would be around Manchester/Chesire, Bit of a trek I appreciate

"Recently, researchers from the CDC and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) caused waves in the medical community with a report analyzing the death records of 37,000 adults. Although obese folks had a greater risk of dying from cancer or heart disease, those who were simply overweight had, surprisingly, no greater risk than normal-weight people. Even more amazing, the findings suggested that being overweight may actually protect against death from a multitude of diseases other than cancer and heart disease. The research made headlines ("Is That Spare Tire a Lifesaver?"). Critics quickly responded that the study failed to consider quality-of-life issues caused by excess pounds and didn't appropriately control for unhealthy habits like smoking, which can keep people lean but undeniably raise cancer risk. Still, it added fuel to the ongoing debate of whether losing weight is absolutely necessary to reduce disease risk if you're not obese."

Thanks Miss Redd - you DO know your stuff!
Checked the label on my bars and they contain "maltitol" - a sugar alcohol.  I have now made a list of the other names for it (listed below for anyone that may be interested)  and will carry that in my handbag when shopping for other bars.

Thanks so much for the info!

"Sugar alcohols are carbohydrates which are also called "polyols". Part of their chemical structure resembles sugar, and part of it resembles alcohol -- hence the confusing name. Examples of common sugar alcohols are maltitol, sorbitol, isomalt, and xylitol."
