I met with my new surgeon yesterday .  She recommended I get the sleeve instead of RNY .  I said tricare doesn't cover it BUT as of march 15, they will be.  I did some research today on sleeve vs rny .  Not much difference in the weight loss, or the risks. Biggest difference is NO dumping and no rearranging your guts with the sleeve.  The doctor I had back in NC near Camp Lejeune, said I HAD to lose a specific amount of weight.  This lady says it would be good but she will preform surgery as long as I make effort to lose. So 10 lbs is OK . Or 30 lbs is great.  I love her.  This is the first time I've been 100% sure, and excited to have WLS done .  Before I was always hesitant and worried bout death a lot.  So how are both of you doing this week ?

Glad to see you both here ! We should get this group started again.   I know there's  a lot of military spouses out there.    Sounds like the 3 of us are around the same time in our process of getting WLS .   I'm meeting with a new surgeon this week.  So what type are you both wanting ?  I'm doing RNY , would have liked the sleeve but tri-care won't cover that.

Maybe we can revive this group! I'm also pre-op located in Schweinfurt, Germany. I just got the call Friday that Tri-Care has approved my referral to meet with the surgeon for his evaluation and recommendation. I was previously approved at Fort Benning, GA to have the surgery performed in Atlanta but then we PCS'd here to Germany. So far the process has been fairly straightforward: 6 months nutritionist counseling, 1 behavioral health screening, and being able to show some progress towards weight loss on my own (15+lbs). Once I get the recommendation from a German surgeon, it has to go back to Tri-Care for another referral for the surgery itself. Almost makes me wish I hadn't waited so long to get started while we were in Georgia!

Hey! I assumed there would be a huge military spouse wls group, too! I am also pre-op. I had gotten 90% of the way through pre-op in TX and then we pcs'd to MD. I am now working my way through the extensive pre-op process at Walter Reed/Bethesda. Met with the nutritionist today, and have about 5 more pre-op related appointments this month alone! I am working towards a mid-April/early May surgery date if I can get it all done/transferred by next month.

Topic: Dead Group ?

Is anyone here ? I don't see any recent posts. That's to bad. I was hoping to find a group of military spouses to connect with .  Let me know if any of you are still active ! Would love to connect !  A little about me, I've been wanting to get WLS since 2009 , but got pregnant . So I started the process again at camp Lejeune. Then my husband deployed 3x and didn't' have any support to help with  the kids. Well now he's deployed again but I've moved to be near family. Now I can finally go ahead and have the surgery. Meeting with the surgeon on 2/6/12

Ah, so I guess it's different for you. Are you having the surgery at a Military Facility? The one thing that is good about Portsmouth Naval is I don't have to go through the insurance approval process. It's still painfully slow though. I already had some tests done and did 6 months with the Dietician last year (before they referred me to bariatrics). I hope they don't want to send me for a bunch more testing. I guess I'll find out on May 3rd. Do they just having you do the basic diet based off the food pyramid thing?

Hope all is well with you... Not too many people here anymore!

I had my orientation and consultation with the surgeon on March 5th... I'm with Tricare Prime North so I'm required to follow a 6 month Dr supervised Diet, which I've been doing since January... I have a few tests that I need to get done as well, which will probably be done in May/June...Once the 6 months diet is up in july, my Dr will send all test results and other paperwork to my surgeon who will request the approval from Tricare :o)

Hi everyone,
I'm Kris, in Hampton, VA. I just had my orientation today at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. Now I have to have a bunch of labs/tests done. I'm suppose to get a call in a couple fo weeks to schedule me for my first consultation with the Dr. Hopefully it passes quickly!
