You have a surgery date.  YAHOO!

I also had Dr Dutta.  I think he is wonderful!  My surgery went very well.  I did have a hernia which was repaired at the same time I had the RNY.  Recovery was quick and weight loss was quick.  I feel that the decision was definitely the right one for me.  I'm so much happier and healthier now.

Before surgery, I only told people about it who I felt would be supportive, and I think I made the right decision.

If you are still uncertain about whether or not you want the surgery, then maybe discussing it further with people on both sides of the fence makes sense.  But if you've made up your mind to have the surgery, I would recommend that you only keep positive people around you during this last month.  There's enough emotional excitement without others making you more anxious.  Your doctors (surgeon and primary care provider) can answer any concerns you may have with knowledgeable objectivity.  Your supportive friends can help you enter the surgery with self confidence.  A positive attitude is an important ingredient for making the surgery and your recovery a success.

Right now, you come first!

Janice

Topic: Hello there, new member here
Hi all, I just wanted to say hello to my fellow East bay members. Just a little about me, I just turned 34 and I work full time at a job I love along with attending college full time. I have a busy life and decided six months ago to take some time for me and get my weight and health under control. I will be having the RNY gastric bypass surgery on October 12, 2009 at Kaiser Permanente in Fremont CA. My surgeon, Dr. Dutta, is my total inspiration and I feel completely safe in his hands. I do have one small dilemma and that is my family is not too supportive of my decision. They claim it is due to being scared for my life and that they believe that I can achieve my weight loss goals on my own.

Now mind you, I love my people very much but after this last weekend of pressure I have decided to only keep positive people around me during this last month of pre op.

Has anyone else experienced this type of feedback from their loved ones?

Thank you for listening,
Healthy Regards,
Angie Urena

Topic: Your favorite East Bay restaurant for Bariatric patients??
Hi Gang,

Let's share information on restaurants in the East Bay that serve "bariatric" patient serving sizes, not super sizes.  You know "normal" serving sizes, not "American" serving sizes (think food arriving on serving platters instead of dinner or appetizer plates).

Let's brainstorm on places we can go and make wise, healthy food choices.  Can anyone name a Mexican restaurant that doesn't feed four with one order?  Seriously.  How about a breakfast place that doesn't serve an omlett the size of your forearm?  If you can't think of one at the moment, pay attention to the portion sizes at the next restaurant you visit and then post your findings.

Speak up and share.  I know I appreciate the leads.

Take care,
Kimberlee

Topic: Another Back-on-Track series?
Hi Members,

Once we know what will happen to the San Leandro Hospital, I will explore dates for another session of the special Back-on-Track program.  If you are interested in the program, please let m know when and what a good starting date might be for you.  It probably won't happen until September, maybe October, with the goal of completing the program before the holidays take us over.  I'm sure it will be on Saturday mornings again as that worked best for me babysitting-wise.

Let me know,
Kimberlee

Topic: Have you heard anything about San Leandro Hospital?
Hi Members,

I have not caught any news about the fate of San Leandro Hospital.  Have you?  Please post here should you catch anything online or in the news.

If you haven't contacted your Alameda County Supervisor or San Leandro Council Member yet, please do so today.  Here's a link for their info and who else you can lobby to keep our meeting place and the hospital open: http://www.savesanleandrohospital.com.

As far as I know, our July meeting will be at San Leandro Hospital.  Please keep visiting our group page for updates.

Thanks for helping out on this issue,

Kimberlee

Topic: RE: Question of the Week: Newbies, Pre-Ops chime in!
I can live with the fact that I may lose some "friends", or should I say associates. I have only 2 very true friends , both of whom support my decision to have WLS. One does play devil's advocate, but only to force me to see the tough life ahead of me post-op (she's an R.N.-I love her very much). I also have a very supportive family, and psych "team" in the form of Kaiser Psych; I have been seeing my doctors for over a year and believe that I can be successful in having WLS.

As for my husband, he has ALWAYS supported me. He loves my size and loves me for who I am; he only wants me to be healthy. We have discussed this for the last 2 years. Just today he complimented me on my accomplishments in the last 2 year (exercise 5 days a week, -50lbs, eating healthier). He told me his was very proud of me--I was elated!

The decision to have WLS was mine. I am fully aware that the decision comes with some unfortunate results--loss of associates, alienation by coworkers--but I'm not doing this for them. I'm doing this for me. To prolong my life. To see my daughter off to college. To play with my future grandchilden. To retire with my husband and enjoy life after working so many years. To live. I know what my motives are.
