Topic: Weekly Question: Is Weight Loss Surgery just an 'easy out' of obesity?
I am 15 months post op, I have lost over 230 pounds. People who knew me when I was fat always ask what I did and how I did it. More times than not when I say I had the Gastric Bypass (RnY) they make comments of, "Oh the easy way out, huh?". But when I say I made a lifestyle change, they seem more impressed the amount of discipline and dedication it takes. Isn't the RnY, or any WLS for that matter, a lifestyle change? It takes just as much, if not MORE dedication and discipline to stay on track after surgery. Why is it then when I say the magic words of "Weight Loss Surgery" do I get a different reaction than if I just keep to saying, "Lifestyle Change"?

Mine is not very original: go back to the basics and lose the remaining pregnancy weight. I'm carrying 15 pounds of it still (which is considered pretty good but the pants are pretty tight!). Once that's gone, I want to focus on losing any of the 25 pounds I regained before the pregancy.

Unfortunatly, My shopping has increased emensly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have probably over 200 pairs of shoes and 400 tops it is out of hand. Also, now all I want to eat is chocolate (candy) and junk foods because I don't digest meats very well and junk (slidder foods) do go down easier.I had surgery 3/24/2003 I lost 168 lbs. I regained 20 lbs within the first year kept it off until 2007 lost my job (homebuilder) laid off for 6 months totally depressed. I regained another 20 lbs in a year. I am doing the 5 day pouch test and exercising again I WILL BEAT THIS THING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wasn't afraid at all until the very day before surgery. Then, I was afraid that I might be one of the unlucky 1-2% who either die or have some severe complication. I was so scared that the thought of leaving the hotel that I had checked into and cancelling at the last minute crossed my mind. Instead, I decided to just "sleep on it" and decide the morning of surgery, which was the next morning. I woke up feeling just fine and prepared. I knew full well why I had chosen the surgery and went in with hope in my heart!

It's hard to think back that far on specifics but I believe I was most afraid of this too failing me like so many diets had in the past. If EVEN SURGERY wouldn't work to get the weight of, nothing would!
At times I recall I was also afraid of how my personality would change, for the worse. We all know someone that lost weight (while we were still heavy) and as their weight went away, we labeled that person a "*****" but in reality his/her confidence was soaring and he/she was experiencing happiness, not *****iness, but the baggage of my obesity that I carried didn't allow me to be happy for that person and so my judgment was clouded and I feared I too would become a *****
But, phew, I'm so glad I got over those fears and had my surgery.

Great question! Thanks for asking it and giving some examples. After the weight was gone I would say I definitely replaced food with shopping; I became quite the shopaholic with so many new clothing options to choose from. Luckily I got that and my credit cards back under control; phew. Since I often joke that my "vice" is coffee, I think I would have to say that over the last couple of years, I have replaced grazing with coffee. Instead of nibbling at my desk off and on at work, I would pound down the cofee - regular or decaf. Now that I'm a stay-at-home mom, I find that I still want to hit the coffee pot - decaf - so that must still be my vice.
If only I could say I replaced food with exercise, ahhhh! But I know many of our members have done just that and I'm deeply proud of them, seriously.

I was extatic when I got my surgery date which was only 4 days after the phone call. I didn't have time to be afraid of anything. I was thrilled that my life was about to change. I was ready to make a change and I was determined. I loved everything about it and I love the new person that I see in the mirror everyday. Most of all, I love the way I feel everyday. I am at my healthiest and the amount of energy that I have is unbelievable.

Exercise for me has definitely replaced my food addiction. I wake up at 4:15 am everyday to exercise. I start out by doing a 45 min cardio then a 20 min turbo abs workout one morning, then the next morning, I'd start out by doing a 40 min turbo sculpt then a 20 min turbo abs workout. I cannot imagine going a day without doing my exercise routine. I am somewhat addicted to it now. And I actually feel tired and fatigued when I skip.
The other thing that I think may have replaced my food addiction is shopping. Not so much as exercise though but I think I may have become a shop-a-holic.
