Hi all, I just wanted to say hello to my fellow East bay members. Just a little about me, I just turned 34 and I work full time at a job I love along with attending college full time. I have a busy life and decided six months ago to take some time for me and get my weight and health under control. I will be having the RNY gastric bypass surgery on October 12, 2009 at Kaiser Permanente in Fremont CA. My surgeon, Dr. Dutta, is my total inspiration and I feel completely safe in his hands. I do have one small dilemma and that is my family is not too supportive of my decision. They claim it is due to being scared for my life and that they believe that I can achieve my weight loss goals on my own.
Now mind you, I love my people very much but after this last weekend of pressure I have decided to only keep positive people around me during this last month of pre op.
Has anyone else experienced this type of feedback from their loved ones?
Thank you for listening,
Healthy Regards,
Angie Urena

You have a surgery date. YAHOO!
I also had Dr Dutta. I think he is wonderful! My surgery went very well. I did have a hernia which was repaired at the same time I had the RNY. Recovery was quick and weight loss was quick. I feel that the decision was definitely the right one for me. I'm so much happier and healthier now.
Before surgery, I only told people about it who I felt would be supportive, and I think I made the right decision.
If you are still uncertain about whether or not you want the surgery, then maybe discussing it further with people on both sides of the fence makes sense. But if you've made up your mind to have the surgery, I would recommend that you only keep positive people around you during this last month. There's enough emotional excitement without others making you more anxious. Your doctors (surgeon and primary care provider) can answer any concerns you may have with knowledgeable objectivity. Your supportive friends can help you enter the surgery with self confidence. A positive attitude is an important ingredient for making the surgery and your recovery a success.
Right now, you come first!

Hello there Janice! Thank you so much for the kind words! I almost feel guilty being so darn EXCITED! I actually did it, I got a date and I must say that I worked pretty darn hard for that date! I still have a few lbs to lose before pre op in a month but I am MOST confident that I will accomplish that. I just need to shake off this funk of all of the negative vibes being flung at me by my family. It made me lose a little control over the weekend and that made me really scared. It made me doubt my "control" ability that I have been working so hard at these last few months. I for sure want this surgery with every fiber in my body! I just hope that these little hiccups I have (overeating) will not be my downfall for a successful journey. It would be nice to hear that a few others went through a few hiccups during their pre op stage. I read all of these wonderful success stories and it seems that the ones who truly make it already conquered their hiccups by now.
Do you go to the support groups? When are they? Is San Leandro hospital still open?
I go to the support group. It is comforting to me to be with people going through the same experiences. This months group meeting is on the 19th, from 1:15 - 3:30 at San Leandro Hospital. I think Kimberlee's father will be facilitating the meeting. He had his surgery earlier this year and is doing very well.
I have not had a hiccup yet (knock on wood!) Once I got in the program at Kaiser, I went after the weight loss with a vengeance. I was frustrated when I reached the required 10% and could not get a surgery date. I told myself the goal of the surgery is to lose and keep off the weight, so let's keep going! I lost 20% by my surgery date. Post surgery, the rest of the excess weight came off easily. I realize this is the honeymoon period and that my experience may not be typical.
Hiccups will come for me. But as I've learned from people in our group and from the literature, we can't let hiccups get us down. We need to be kind to ourselves, try to figure out the obstacles (with help from professionals if necessary), and get back on track. If you come to group, you'll hear about many hiccups. Group is great for helping you be nice to yourself, getting you back on track, and celebrating.
