East Bay Bariatric Support Group
Your favorite East Bay restaurant for Bariatric patients??
Hi Gang,
Let's share information on restaurants in the East Bay that serve "bariatric" patient serving sizes, not super sizes. You know "normal" serving sizes, not "American" serving sizes (think food arriving on serving platters instead of dinner or appetizer plates).
Let's brainstorm on places we can go and make wise, healthy food choices. Can anyone name a Mexican restaurant that doesn't feed four with one order? Seriously. How about a breakfast place that doesn't serve an omlett the size of your forearm? If you can't think of one at the moment, pay attention to the portion sizes at the next restaurant you visit and then post your findings.
Speak up and share. I know I appreciate the leads.
Take care,
Kimberlee

I eat out at least twice a week. Since I don't mind eating leftovers, the large portion sizes don't bother me. I take home enough to get me through 1-4 more meals.
I really am glad that a lot of the restaurants now provide nutritional information. My kids and I watch our intake closely, so it takes us longer now to go through the menu's. We like horror movies, and sometimes looking at the nutritional information gives us the same kind of giddy terror! Do you know how many meals have over 2000 calories? It's an eye opener because a lot of things that seem like they would be low-cal are not.
Most sea food restaurants have something for me. I'm a sea food nut and am eating a lot more since the surgery. I love sushi and tolerate the raw fish without any problems. One of my favorite restaurants is Paradise in Concord with has fusion (French, Vietnamese, Japanese and more). I have found good foods for me at the Elephant Bar, El Torrito's, Red Lobster, and the Olive Garden. I love chinese food, which is a bit of a challenge. I don't order the starch (rice or noodles), just the entree. Broccoli Beef is often a good dish.

Federricos in Fremont has reasonable sizes. Still big for us, but not enormous. Plus the food is terrific.
I also like China Chilis in Fremont because they use fresh ingredients. I don't order the rice either.

I tend to eat pretty simply. I like the Whole Foods in Oakland on Bay Street because they have a huge variety of cooked foods. I can get tiny amounts of food. Lots is organic which is a plus to me. There's a Cafe to eat in or eat outdoors on a nice day.
If you happen to work in downtown Oakland, there's a place call The Rotisserie at the corner of Webster and 19th. They have a breakfast bar, decent salad bar, hot bar with several types of meat and usually a fish dish, as well as tofu. Hot veggies like steamed zucchini, green beans, asparagus in season. Starch for those that care of it. They also have protein toppings if you make a salad, or not. All sold by the pound as is Whole Foods.
