The Loser's Bench
Recent Posts
Last weekend was my 10-month surgeri-versary day! I weighed 110 lbs. and have lost 117 lbs! That is a great success to go with my successful dog obedience trial in Winston-Salem, NC. I am soooo glad that whatever I do in the ring with my 8-pound black poodle, I can forget about the laughing people in my brain because I am not morbidly obese anymore. I actually said that to myself so I wouldn't be so nervous! "At least I am thin:)" I am not trying to lose more weight because I have been maintaining a loss of 115 lbs since December. I am still sensitive to carbohydrates and am learning to cook from a low-carb cookbook which I usually can eat without any problems! I am inspired by the weightlosssurgerychannel.com and love to watch their programs about WLS. I hope that I will be able to attend the next meeting in Raleigh.

weigh 110 lbs., lost 117 lbs. forever!
I recently had to deal with a stricture. I started the pureed stage of my diet quite easily and then suddenly everything was making me feel sick. I thought it was normal. It took me over a week before I called the doctor and made an appointment. It took another week before I had the procedure (gastroplasty) to stretch my stoma. The whole time I just felt like a baby and worried that I was wasting everyone's time.,,that I should just deal with it.
SUCCESS:
The procedure went well and by the next day I was back on track with my protein and water intake. It's now been 4 days since the procedure and I feel SO MUCH BETTER! Why did I even doubt that I should go and talk to my doctor? Why did I doubt that I should have the procedure? I'm back on track.
Struggles...
I've been eating as a reaction to stress. Like so many of us, we have had our share of difficulties lately and I'm finding that I am turning to food (read Bullseye candy) for comfort. My weight hasn't been significantly affected. I was 'too thin' for comfort and now I'm getting back to a weight I like, I just hope I get my head in gear so that I don't gain 'unwanted' pounds.
Successes...
We have really been struggling since my husband lost his job, but one silver lining came with our new healthplan that includes a healthclub membership. I just joined and look forward to learning to 'like exercise.' We'll see about that... I'm just about the least athletic, most uncoordinated person you may ever meet, but I'm going to try anyway. I am hoping that this may be a better way to manage the stresses that we are experiencing right now and instead of putting unwanted weight on, maybe I can sculpt some of the physique I already have. :-)

Below is text and a survey sent to me by Bariatric Support Centers International. I encourage you to complete the very short, confidential survey (about 6 questions if I recall correctly) as doing so is a helpful way for bariatric professionals to learn more about what we patients gain from support groups. Thanks in advance for taking the time to particiapte in this survey,
Now is the time and this is the opportunity to share what you really think about the value of and need for Bariatric Support Groups! Please take just a moment of your time to complete this short survey. Results will be available for all to see and we will report our findings to the bariatric professionals who serve you.

Good topic, Barbara. I will try and address each of your questions as you asked them:
How do you incorporate protein into your daily diet? How many grams of protein do you average?
Protein is the main part of each meal/snack I consume. I usually average at least 90-100 grams per day
How many ounces of water do you drink daily?
I always get in at least 64 oz a day, but feel the best with approximately 100 oz.
Is it challenging to consume the amount by your doctor?
I have always been a big believer in hydration. So the 64 oz minimum was only challenging early out post-op.
Do you take your supplements daily?prescribed
What is your vitamin regimen?
I try to be faithful in taking all my supplements and have added several that I feel are necessary for optimum health. I have incorporated my supplement schedule with my meal/snack schedule, so that it becomes automatic.
Do you exercise?
What do you do and how often? I do exercise, but it varies. When it is warmer, I will go to water aerobics at least 3 times a week. But when I can't do this I have a "Gazelle" or elliptical at home along with both yoga and pilates DVDs to workout with. I also do a lot of walking when I can work it in. In the growing months I also count mowing the lawn as part of my exercise since I have a walk mower and it takes more than 1.5 hours to complete my lawn.
I look forward to seeing other responses to this thread and how everyone is handling their daily schedules.
Wishing everyone great success in their journey..............Carrie
Hi Teresa,
It's nice to meet you and I hope to get to meet you in person some time. We have monthly support group meetings in Raleigh on the 3rd Saturday of the month... we'll be having one this coming Saturday as a matter of a fact. At any rate, it sounds like we have a lot in common I have twins that are just about the same age as your children, they turned 27 this past December. I also have a 14 year old. My husband and I are high school sweetheart and have also been married 31 years. We moved to Raleigh from the SF Bay area about 8 years ago.
It sounds like, contrary to popular opinion, Friday the 13th, just might be your lucky day.
Wishing you all the best,
Barbara
