I use an app called Calorie King to track calorie intake and use my fitbit to track calorie output. I am only 8 weeks post op but i think i will be using these tools forever as I already see the potential to slide back into bad habits.

Topic: BMR calculator, is this anywhere near accurate?

HI everyone.

I'd have a question for you. I'm planning a diet and my dietitian said that I need to start counting all calories. Being a total newbie this sounds like rocket-science to me. Now I know that foods have calorie information on packaging but I just feel like this is impossible to do accurately. What is more my BMR is "only" 1768 calories (BMR calculator). I feel like everything I eat has more calories than what my BMR is. So my question is this - can I go with BMR number (and count in the calories burnt during activity /walking, exercising) or should I totally to ignore that number?

I would appreciate your opinion on this.

Topic: RE: salad?

Hi Lea,

You should check with the Registered Dietician that works with your program to see if they feel comfortable with you consuming salads. I am 7 years post op, so the details of my diet graduation are a little fuzzy; that said, I believe that I was about 6 months post op before they said I could have salads, cruciferous vegetables, fruits with skins or seeds. Again, check with your program because each program graduates their patient's food at a different pace. It may be that it was a bit too soon to try salads.

I hope that you are doing well otherwise.

Here's a recipe for Kung Pao Chicken from SkinnyTaste.com. I love many of her recipes. I hope that you enjoy this one. I often will significantly increase the chicken (or pork or shrimp) when making this. Kung Pao Chicken Zoodles For Two

Servings: 2 • Size: scant 2 cups • Old Points: 6 pts • Points+: 7 pts
Calories: 277 • Fat: 12 g • Protein: 24 g • Carb: 21 g • Fiber: 4 g • Sugar: 9 g
Sodium: 725 mg (without salt) • Cholesterol: 62 mg

Ingredients:

  • 2 medium zucchini, about 8 oz each, ends trimmed
  • 1 teaspoon grapeseed or canola oil
  • 6 oz skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 red bell pepper, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp fresh ground ginger
  • 2 tbsp crushed dry roasted peanuts
  • 2 tbsp thinly sliced scallions along diagonal

For the sauce:

  • 1 1/2 tbsp reduced soy sauce (tamari for gluten free)
  • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tsp hoisin sauce
  • 2 1/2 tbsp water
  • 1/2 tbsp Sambal Oelek Red Chili Paste (or more to taste)
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 2 tsp cornstarch

Directions:

Using a spiralizer fitted with a shredder blade (this makes a thicker noodle), or a mandolin fitted with a julienne blade, cut the zucchini into long spaghetti-like strips. If using a spiralizer, use kitchen scissors to cut the strands into pieces that are about 8 inches long so they’re easier to eat.

In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, balsamic, hoisin, water, red chili paste, sugar and cornstarch; set aside.

Season chicken with salt and pepper, to taste. Heat oil in a large, deep nonstick pan or wok over medium-high heat. Add the chicken and coo****il browned and cooked through, about 4 to 5 minutes. Set aside.

Topic: salad?

Yesterday I had about 1/3 of a small mixed salad and ended up with the worst stomach cramps for about 3 hours...is this normal at 3 months out? It was the first time I had tried lettuce, also had some cod. Is it too soon to have salad? I do ok with other vegies.

Topic: Onderland has arrived

Got on the scale this morning 199~~ sooo excited!!  Have not seen below 200 since 1982 or before!  Lot of emotions, doin' the happy dance in the bathroom, humming "oh happy day" and acting stupid!!  Great way to wake up!  My weight loss has been slow...31 lbs since 12/26/13 but that is fine with me!  Gotta get ready for work but I just had to tell someone besides the mirror and my spouse how excited I am!

Topic: Is this group still meeting in person?

Forgive me if I am just not seeing the info. Just joined the group today and it seems the last group meet up was posted about a couple of years ago? And when I click on "Events" it's blank. Or am I just in the wrong part of this group? I just found the group section so I am trying to figure out my way around!

Thanks!!!!
