Hi Iris,

It's all a process. First you were learning to recognize the portions, now you are recognizing the quantity and value of what you consume... You are so right about the fact that the tools you use to be acountable do change as the road you are traveling changes.

I think that finding support in whatever form is also a way being accountable to ourselves and others. The statistics show that those who participate support groups are much more successful in their weight loss and maintenance.

The board has been so slow and quiet lately... I'm glad to see your friendly face.

Warmly,

Barbara

I have to change things around every so often. Tracking my foods is major for me right now. Measuring out my food portion size used to be a major thing - but now that I use the same
plates, cups and bowls it becomes second nature.

Coming to the OH forums on a regular basis is also critical for me. I'm over 2 hours away from my surgeon's office so it's not that easy to get to his support group meetings. After you come here you begin to form bonds over time and you share in the successes and failures that they have. It makes it so you know you're never alone and that you can more easily share your battles (head hunger, falling off the exercise wagon, mindless munching, reappearing bad habits...etc).

Thanks for making me think this morning.

- Iris

I do a few things:

Weigh and Measure - I'm still not comfortable with portion size and I fight a serious headhunger battle.  This helps me know I am eating enough.

Clothes - Also gave away all of my fat clothing.  I only have my current size and I can't afford to buy bigger sizes !!! :>

Go to Support group - This is important because the same people see me every month.  I know they will know if I am trying to fool them or myself.  But I also know they are the ones who will help to pull me back on track when I need it!

I know that support is a major factor in my own success to date and studies have shown that those who are active in support groups are statistically much more likely to reach and maintain their goal wieght.

We all have to do what works for us re: accountability in general and hopping off and on the scale in specific. I know that I couldn't help but get on daily, but learned to just track my weight once a week as I was losing, but now that I'm maintaining, I find that getting on the scale daily reminds me of where I want to be and what I need to do each day to get there.

Right before my surgery I bought a whole new collection of dinnerware and they have a beautiful wide border that surrounds most of the edge of the plate. During the first year or so I used the salad/desert plate which had an area about the size of a small saucer that was 'open' and put my portions on that. Now that I'm farther out and eat more to maintain my weight, I actually use the regular sized dinner plate, but the 'open/white' space on that plate is about the size of a small salad/desert plate, so I only put the food on the white space. While I know I'm just fooling my eye, it looks like I'm eating a more normal meal that way. Whatever... it works and I guess that's the point. We have to find something that works for us and it sounds like you have found something that works for you.

Wishing you continued success,

Hi Deborah,

Congratulations on your phenomenal success! You've done a wonderful job with that band of yours. Like you, Ben and I often share a meal... it saves money and calories... LOL.

I'm lucky, as an RNY patient and am able to eat whatever I want and not have any problems, so moderation is the key for me. If I gain a few pounds, I take a look at 'what I'm eating' and find that I'm getting too many carbs and not enough protien. As soon as I reverse it, the extra pounds slide off again.

I haven't seen the latest OH magazine... I need to get that fixed, but I hope to see a copy of it at the ATL convention and look forward to seeing you there as well.

Wishing you continued success,

Hi Lisa,

For many, the accountability that support groups provide is a major factor in their success. Actually, being active in support groups is one of the indicators of long term success.

Hi All
My name is Gina and I live in NJ. I have been over weight since 4th grade. I was the kid pick last for gym class. I have grown into myself and gown out. I have excepted my weight and lived life full tilt. I am married to a wonderful man (Ron) who love me because of my outgoing personality. I will try everything once to see if I like it and again if I do. I am very loving and giving person.

I decided to lose this weight not because I felt it stop me from doing thing, but because I so enjoy my life with my man that I didn't want it to end prematurely

I started my journey with Weigh****chers and lost 60lbs then started to gain some back. That is when I decided to look into WLS. By the time I had the surgery I had gained 30 of the 60 that I lost I have now lost a total of 100lbs from my highest of 318 and 78 with the lap band. I slip sometime and lose my way but the path is well lighted and easy for me to get back on with this band.

Thanks for read and supporting.

Barbara
Thank you for such a great post.

1)I get on the boards and read and post. I find that when I'm here with you all I do better.

2)I weigh myself everyday except when I had a slip. Because seeing it go up make it worse. When that happens I get right back on the horse.

3)I eat off a small plate.
