How do you get your protien?

Welcome to the Group!

You might try cottage cheese and/or skim ricotta. It's loaded with protein and you can make it savory or sweet. Check out Shelli's blog at http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com for wealth of recipes for all sorts of goodies.

My major protein is consumed in the morning for breakfast. I make a smoothie everyday:

2 C Frozen fruit
1 4oz yogurt
1 cup silk or OJ (tropicana 50% less sugar)
1 and 1/2 scoop protein powder (Isopure)

I get close to 40+ g of protein in.  My Dr. wants me with 90g a day of protein. It is a big smoothie - rougly 29-30oz.  But i make it thick and sip on it for about an hour.
The rest is eaten.  Sometimes through a South Beach High Protein bar, but mostly through just regular food proteins.   I have zero trouble getting in the protein, as long as I have my smoothie once a day.

That smoothie also helps me get in my fruit/veggies (5-6 servings) with the smoothie being 3 servings if I use the OJ with the fruit.

But sometimes (like today) i couldn't (didn't have time) so I stopped at a coffee house in Garner that makes a Frappe and let's me bring my protein powder.  They use skim milk and sugar free toriani syrups.

Hmmm.... I'll have to see about printing this one off and giving it a try. Sounds right up my alley. I'm from CA and they have something called "Jamba Juice" there... I think there's one in Chapel Hill here. At any rate, what you make sounds a lot like my favorite drink from there.

Hope you are well.

I'm only 8 weeks out, so I'm still not able to get all my protein by "eating" it because I can't eat enough protein with the 1.5 - 2 ounces I'm allowed 5 - 6 times per day.  Therefore, I supplement with IsoPure Grape Frost, Icy Orange, and Pineapple Orange Banana, or with New Whey Protein bullets with 42 grams of protein added to my Wild Berry Herbal Tea.  That's because I can use those beverages as part of my "water" requirements - I have a heck of a time getting in 64 ounces - makes me feel like I'm drowning....  Other times, I'll have a Lean Dessert Shake instead of a mid-morning or mid-afternoon snack.  Sometimes, I'll really have a soup craving (and I have an incredible spinach soup recipe which you make in the VitaMix), so I'll make it and add some of the Any Whey Protein for one of the mid-morning or mid-evening snacks as well.

Hi Erica,

Just hang in there. You'll get to where you can consume more and more, through foods and be able to 'wean' off of the protien drinks with time. Cottage cheese is often a good, dense source that goes down easily and while you may like it plain, it can be dressed up sweetly or dressed down with a savory touch.

It will get better and better as the weeks and months pass by.

I usually have a protein shake each and every day! My homemade shakes (link to my recipe list in the signature line) usually clock in at 35g of protein or more with just over 200 calories, so it's a worthy breakfast and it holds me until lunch.

I don't tend to do bars because with the bit of protein they give you, you usually have to take a LOT of carbs and calories. Plus they don't mentally satisfy. I find myself going "...ok, now what?" Usually my requisite 70g of protein per day is acheived by my afternoon snack so if I wanted dinner could be more veggie based and not mess up my day. More often than not, however, I go for a high protein dinner and my day's total usually exceeds 120g a day which is good because I lift weights and exercise a lot and I've seen great muscle tone development as a result.

Nik,

Thanks for the link for the protein shake recipes. While, I've never done 'em much. I'm thinking that I might give 'em a try again as I think it might help in the long term maintenance.

Congrats on your amazing success!

I try to get most of my protein from my food, but usually have at least one protein shake each day.  There are so many wonderful recipes out on the forums (check out the RNY forum especially) , they do double duty by serving both as added protein and a real treat at the same time.  My protein is usually at least 80 grams a day.  I have a very sensitive pouch and if nothing else is acceptable a protein shake or ice cream usually is.

I haven't been doing protein shakes for more than a year, but I'm rethinking that... Maybe it would help to keep the weight off.... We'll see.

Have a great time at the beach... I'll be thinking of you.

Hi!
I am 5 months out today and I try hard to get my protein from food.  My NUT has me on 70grams of protein a day because I have a knee problem and have to keep my exercise to swimming only.  I enjoy reading the recipes that other people have created and when possible I make them for my husband and I (He had RNY in Feb. 2008).  I had my surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in Florida.  I am in Phase IV of their process which doesn't yet allow fruits or complex carbs.  I basically eat protein and some veggies.  That kind of restrics my recipes but do not feel unfilled at all.  I usually get a turkey or fish in every day that accounts for 1/2 of my protein. On those days where I cannot get in my full protein with food I supplement a protein drink (I prefer chocolate unjury) in the evening.   Occasionally I have a protein bar, my husband uses these more than I do because I feel like I am trying to supplement them for a "snack" and then I don't necessarily choose the best bar for me!!!  That is something I have to work on.
