Hello Everybody,

Its been a while since I have checked in. I do look in every now and again. I am so glad to see so many new members. Welcome everybody. I will say if you are considering WLS surgery, you are doing the right thing. This group was my life line for a good 4 - 5 months. Everybody will send encouragement and suggestions to make this life change go much smoother.

As for me, The weight loss is doing great, I am now 150 lbs and am between sizes 8 and 10. My highest weight was 250 lbs. The scale says 150 lbs but I have to say people don't believe it. I carry this weight well and look much smaller than what that scale says. I still work out and do a lot weight training helps so much if you want to loose stuborn fat.  Would love it if can lose 25 more lbs. But will not be heartbroken if it doesn't happen as long as I don't gain any weight  I am happy.

The last time I was on here I mentioned that I found a lump on my neck. It has been diagnosed as follicular neoplasm. The lump on the left size of my neck is now 6 cm. the size of a large egg. I also have 3 more nodules on the right side but not visible like the left side. The doctors say the whole thyroid has to be removed . I try not to think about it too much as it upsets me. Surgery has been scheduled for 11/15/11.  I hate that I now have to take another pill forever. But I guess its better than the alternative of having thyroid cancer. My family have been very supportive. I have to say though lately it has been a bit smothering, but I know they mean well.

Just wanted to vent a bit, even though I am a victim of this disease I am still the rock of my family. I am always the strong one and the one that solves all for everybody. My parents and siblings have taken this news pretty hard so I can't breakdown in front of them. I certainly want to appear strong in front of my kids, they are only 14 and16 yrs old. I don't want to freak them out. My husband has been great, he keeps my spirits up.

Thanks everybody for listening.

Mini Gastric Bypass on 10/13/11
Topic: RE: Newbie. Trying to decide on which surgery (sleeve or RNY). What do I do with this sweet tooth? etc
Hi all,

I had the sleeve gastric bypass last week (10/13/11) and I am doing well. No problems with walking and bending over either. I was like the both of you trying to decide last month what surgery to have and my surgeon and I decided on the SGB. I liked the fact that it was simple. My new stomach is intact to my small intestine about 6-8 inches further down than my original stomach. I feel both can be successful b/c I have friends that had both and they are doing great. Good Luck!

Congrats on your date! I am scheduled for December 28th, well tentatively. i still need insurance approval but i had to get on the books so i can ask for FMLA. I am counting the days, literally, i have a countdown widget on my phone :)

can i ask something? what is the milk diet? i know we are supposed to do a preop diet to shrink the liver but i think mine is lean meats and veggies or something like that.

Topic: Im New! VSG scheduled 12/28/11
Hi! My name is Sara. I am new to OH but not new to weight loss forums. I have tried many diets, some came with in person support groups while others had online ones. I was a little leary about signing up for a group but i thought that if i needed someone i would need a place to call home. I also started a blog today, it is really long! I made the blog for me, so i wont ever forget where my mind and body is at through all the stages of wls.

I have considered the lap band for several years (10) and most recently the Lap Sleeve as my surgeons office has started calling it. I am more excited about the sleeve than the lap band but also very nervous that i will fail. probably also part of the reason why i didnt want to join anything, i didnt want to have to fail publicly. Not many people know i am having surgery, a few close coworkers, friends and family. I want to scream it to the world but then there is the fear of rejection, failure and others comments.

I started this journey at 300lbs, the day i met my surgeon. i have completed all preop requirements except i need 2 more nutrition visits for insurance purposes, hence the reason why my surgery is scheduled at the end of the year. i am now 285lbs, this morning! I just keep practicing. See my blog for more detailed info about practicing, a very long paragraph about it and i dont want to retype it all :)

Sooo...... Hi everyone in Bariatric buddies forum! Any single parents, women or men around my age (25) and anyone that is around my weight i would love to friend you on here :) and of course anyone else too! i just want someone i can relate with through this process.

Thanks for your post, Maggie.  My Dr. is like yours because he is giving me time to inform myself and consider all the possibilities, which I appreciate.   From what I've read, the sleeve is a simpler procedure surgically, so I don't think he/she would prefer the RNY for you based on that.

I think I'm just going to read, read, read and then have the discussion with him and come to the best conclusion.  I certainly don't want to gain any weight back, either!

All the best to you!  Linda

Thanks for your thoughts "Smile."  I'm with you on the points you make, and hadn't heard that there's possibly less hair loss, which is a good thing!  One thing I like about the sleeve is that it would keep things more naturally intact, i.e., pyloric valve, bowels.

I just want to make the best long term choice.  At my age, I don't plan to have any "do overs!"

Thanks for your post...Linda

Hello to All!  I am also a Newbie!  And I need to decide which surgery to go for...Sleeve or RNY?  I know I will be successful with either, at least the first year.  My concern is in the years to follow!  I DO NOT want to re-gain the weight.  In the past I have been my own worst enemy.  I will be 55 years old this February and weight 245.  I would love to see 140 again.  The only health issue I have is hypothroidism- 20 years ago (when I weighed 150, after having 4 children) my thyroid stopped and I've been gaining weight ever since.
My one question is-how do you gain the weight back with RNY surgery??? I can see stretching your stomach out with the Sleeve, but how the heck can you consume enough food when you barely have a pouch?  DOes that stretch also?
I need to make a decision in the next few weeks and I am trying to research this.  My doctor says I will do great with either, but I think he prefers the RNY for me...maybe it is an easier surgery for him?  Any advice would be helpful and very appreciated!

Thanks, Maggie

I am working my way toward my surgery date, but have done the research in order to choose which surgery I want.  I am choosing the sleeve.  I think this is best for me.  There are pros & cons of both.  I've decided on the sleeve because there is no dumping with the sleeve.  Also, I've read that the vitamin deffic. are less severe with the sleeve and that there is possibly less risk of hair loss.  Not to say that these won't happen, but I think the risk is lower.  I like that with the sleeve I will be restricted, but the pouch is bigger then the RNY.  Also, I like that there is no re-routing of bowels.  That is just some insight as to what I have found and how I came to my decision.  Good luck on yours and just do your research.
