You seem to have a great attitude, from your post; that it will be a healtier life.

I had the RNY about 8 weeks ago, and as I have siad over and over like a broken record haha - it is the best decision I ever made.  I had no idea how precious being healthy was until I lost it.  I now feel alive - like I was born again.

What I did pre-op was made a list of reasons I want to get the surgery - health reasons, appearance reasons, psychological reasons - be specific; what do you really want in life.

Mine ended up being two pages long! It hangs on my wall now. Whenever I have a moment of weakness, I just read it and I am assured that my life can only get better from here!

Also, though everyone is different, I had less pain than I thought I would.  They send you home with a few pain killer RXs and I really only used them the first week and a half.  I felt overall it was very tolerable.

And this seems impossible but after that first week, I felt healthier.  I could breath better, move better, and my joints didn't hurt as much.  And trsut me it gets better and easier and more fun every day that passes!

Being fast shouldn't be even of remote importance when considering surgery.

No surgery is a quick fix and none are easy.

I don't want to scare you because this was the best decision I ever made.  But, it takes lifelong commitment to a permanent lifestyle change.
It is a challenge at first because you are changing basically every thought and action and behavior you had of food, eating, and exercise.
As my doctor and the program around my RNY repeated at every pre-op appt, a better chance of lifelong success will likey come to those who had decided before the surgery that they were ready to life a healthier lifestyle.

The turning point to even start the reseach on bariatric surgery was stepping on the scale one day and seeing 299 lbs.  Right then and there something clicked; I did not want to be 300 lbs.  Everyone has a different motivation and motivation is what you will need more than anything.

Good luck to you =)

Topic: RE: Hello everyone :)
Well I can only tell you why I chose the gastric bypass (Roux En Y).  This is info I had researched before my surgery - take these stats with a grain of salt because everyone is different, as is every doctor and program. These are in order of importance for me (1 being most)...

1) estimated 77% less hunger on average - lap band is said to not reduce hunger

2) I went to my surgeon's first lecture - it had tons of pros and cons of each type and I chose what was best for me

3) I did not want the open port (with risk of infection) and a foreign object in my body (the lap band)

4) Medicare did not financially support the sleeve

I am very happy with my decision.  I didn't have much pain and I have very little unwanted hunger/cravings - which was my major downfall before the surgery.  For instance, I love cheese and used to go overboard craving and eating it.  Now it is like every other food for me - needed for health and life but not an obsession or addiction.

Advice I would give to anyone is to reasearch every aspect possible, especially your surgeon's stats, lectures, and knowledge.

Great to see you posting again.  Patrece is dealing with her own busy life issues, we chat on the phone every week or so.  She sends greetings to everyone.

I will support your efforts for health improvement.  That is what this group is all about.  I am considering plastics, the hanging abdomen is really causing issues for me.  I can't believe how much better I feel with over 100# gone.

I have been working excessive hours at times, realizing that I need to use the word "no" more often when work calls with overtime.  I want to spend more time with my hobbies and living life.  Take care, let us know how we can support you best.  Hugs

Topic: RE: Appointments and Waiting
Thank you all, I'm gald it's not just me, i have been using my sons plates and spoons and forks The smaller meals aren't too bad but usually wind up going for more. I also have the problem not drinking with my meal it's weird how hard something so simple can be, On the second I have my hopefuly last appoinment with the psychologist, if he sees fit then I can continue on. That will be one step closer then nutruition appointment, after that 3 more to go, so much easier once things start falling into place.

 Hey Kathy,
I'm thinking of getting the DS. I've done tons of research and truly believe it's the right surgery for me. I am nervous about complications down the road, but I know if I don't make a change soon I'll have many more health problems. I already do. I have tendonitis in my ankles and feet, and even if I lose the weight my drs can't assure me that it will go away. I have to wear these stupid and clumsy braces on my ankles.

Since so few drs do the DS I know I'll have to travel, but I have a great internest set up to help me with my blood work and labs. I know there is a lot of controversy about the DS. Especially lately, but I'm just trying to do the right thing for me. Of course if anyone has any advice I'd be more than happy to listen. Any info I can get is always helpful.

I'm so glad to see you again Kathy :) How is Patrece doing? I hope she's well. You and her gave me so much support, I'll always be thankful.

Hugs,
Sukie
