Welcome to our little family here at OH !!

When I was going thru my surgery prep I ended up waiting more than a year after I first consulted a Baratric Surgeon.  I too have been a yo-yo dieter in the past and have figured out that those who have never had a weight loss issue will NEVER understand the frustrations that we feel about the attempts at weight loss that we go thru.  I weighed 273 at my highest and the day I had surgery I weighed 265.  I recently weighed myself and I am currently at 170 and I realized that I have not been this small in literally 20 years.  Ignore the naysayers that you run across and know that you are doing the best thing for your health by doing this surgery.  My mother is surprised at how small I am getting. My 6 year old can actually wrap his arms around my waist and overlap his hands at the back.  I can almost keep up with the 6 year old now..

Be Blessed.

Jenn

Congratulations on the future grandbaby!!!

Can't believe half of what doctors say about not being able to get pregnant. I know quite a few people who have even adopted and then SURPRISE ..  here comes God's gift.  I believe that it all is in Gods control.

Many Blessings to all!!

Get girl.  Thanx for thinking of me.  I really should get here and post more regular.  If nothing else atleast post a blog.  I am feeling pretty good so far this week.  Sinuses kicking my a$$.  Figured I would take a claritin D.  Bad choice.  It had the opposite effect on me.  Made me sleepy but wired me at the same time.... LOL..  Took a long hot shower.  Hoping that my droopy eyelids means that I will be OUT like a LIGHT in just a few.

I have been seeing the Psychologist, but missed the last 2 appts.  I need to reschedule.  Thinking of going to the office where the psychiatrist is as well.  I am gonna see if they will change my antidepressant.  Been on the same thing and the same dosage for 8 years now.  There may be something better out there.

I have missed Monday night chats because I have took a nap right through them.  Unfortunately I will miss this one as well due to being out of town.  Gonna get my nephew from va and bring him up to PA for the week and then next weekend my family are getting together for a cookout and such.  So looking forward to some fun in the SUN.

So glad that you are finally feeling better.  WTG on getting the cortisone shot.  Sometimes we just need that extra help.  Hope that it helps you in your therapy so that you can continue and build that strength up.

I am gonna go into the gym next week and switch personal trainers to give me more options of when I can work out.  Hopefully that will help get me re-motivated as well.  I know that once I get in there, I will get motivated again.  Just cant get my butt in there.  If I schedule a personal trainer session,  I know I will go and not cancel the appt.

Have a great weekend.  sorry so long.  missed ya as well.

Topic: Milk Allergies and Protein Drinks/Products

Hi everyone,
I recenty asked a question about milk allergies and ability to use the protein drinks/ supplements post - surgery.  I am allergic to casein and was concerned that I would not be able to use products like UJURY or others as they are comprised from milk products, especially whey.  What the heck is whey anyway? I am going for RNY in late June and was worried that I would not be able to use the shakes, etc.

So - thought I would share after a little research.  I am happy to report that whey is a separate protein (plus other stuff) while casein is a different animal.   Whey, lactose and casein are found in milk - cow's milk has a lot of casein whereas human milk has less.  Per many reports, whey protein has many health benefits, especially when not de-natured (heated at too high a temperature).

If anyone is interested, I can provide more information. I am interested in ensuring what I eat from now on has as few irritants, allergans, chemicals etc as possible ....and am trying to learn more about organics, raw roods and just how to eat a healthier diet.

I wanted to share this in the event anyone else had milk allergy concerns.  Here is a quick description of whey:

Whey protein is a mixture of globular proteins isolated from whey, the liquid material created as a by-product of cheese production. Some preclinical studies in rodents have suggested that whey protein may possess anti-inflammatory or anti-cancer properties; however, human data is lacking.[ Whey protein is commonly marketed and ingested as a dietary supplement, and various health claims have been attributed to it in the alternative medicine community.[4] Although whey proteins are responsible for some milk allergies, the major allergens in milk are the caseins Whey is left over when milk coagulates and contains everything that is soluble from milk. It is a 5% solution of lactose in water, with some minerals and lactalbumin.  It is removed after cheese is processed. The fat is removed and then is processed for human foods. Processing can be done by simple drying, or the protein content can be increased by removing lipids and other non-protein materials. Whey protein can be denatured by heat. High heat (such as the sustained high temperatures above 72 °C associated with the pasteurization process) denatures whey proteins. While native whey protein does not aggregate upon renneting or acidification of milk, denaturing the whey protein triggers hydrophobic interactions with other proteins, and the formation of a protein gelHeat-denatured whey can still cause allergies in some people. Whey protein is the collection of globular proteins isolated from whey, a by-product of cheese manufactured from cow's milk. Cow's milk is 20% whey protein and 80% casein protein, whereas human milk is 60% whey and 40% casein.  Whey protein is typically a mixture of beta-lactoglobulin (~65%), alpha-lactalbumin (~25%), and serum albumin (~8%), which are soluble in their native forms, independent of pH. The protein fraction in whey (approximately 10% of the total dry solids within whey) comprises four major protein fractions and six minor protein fractions. The major protein fractions in whey are beta-lactoglobulin, alpha-lactalbumin, bovine serum albumin and immunoglobulins.

FRAN!!!!!
It's so good to hear from you!!! I figured you were busy with work, but was going to send you a PM if I didn't see you on here soon. Glad you are losing inches. My weight lose has slowed down the last 2 weeks. I'm in PT now and working up on my exercises. I feel that I'm finally at a place that it is doing good and strengthening my muscles. Also broke down and got a cortisone shot so I can walk better and longer.
Glad your mood has stabilized. It was tough on you for quite awhile. My PNC just raised my Effexor for the first time since surgery. I know many people have to go up on meds due to the WLS.
I'm now able to eat normally. I thought it would never happen no more pain or N/V. I still use one profect a day just to up my protein.
All in all, life is good. My sister just transferred to a different hospital in the same health system. She is working 32 hours a week and still gets full benefits. She is thrilled. Some of the people in pre-op and surgery she knows already and that helps her feel more settled.
Sorry this is so long. It's just that I've missed you and others that use to go to Monday chat room.  Take care of yourself. Stop lurking and write a line or two so we know what's up.  Your friend,   Mag
