Topic: now back after long time away and surgery is pending
Well, I have re-surfaced after being away for quite a bit. my surgery has been approved through the insurance company after a second psych eval. long story about that. i am now waiting for the authorization to be sent to my surgeon's office so that i can schedule the surgery. i'm figuring surgery to be the end of may or the beginning of june. i don't have to do a lot of lifting at work (basically stand at a register and take orders and take money) so i'm not sure how long i will have to be off work. hopefully only for two weeks or so. i'm actually hoping it will be a week and a half. i live alone and was wondering if i should make plans for someone to be with me for a few days after the surgery or is it okay to be alone? will i be able to lay down in my bed and sleep or will i need to try and find a recliner from someone to borrow so that i can sit up and sleep? i finished the nutrition classes back in november and feel like i have forgotten so much information. i'm re-reading the handouts but i have asked for a meeting with the nutritionist at the weight loss clinic that i'm willing to pay for but i feel like it will make me feel better about the food choices i will have to make. this has been a long year of waiting, evals and classes. also any suggestions about where to find non-flavored protein powder?

Hello Group!
Wow it's been a long time since I've been in here.
A Lot has been happening in my life. My mom is now living with my sister and I'm getting married in September!
I don't know what I would have done without this group of wonderful people to guide me along in my journey. Especially Patrece! She gave me the courage to be able to love a wonderful man and feel comfortable with how I look.
I look forward to reading some of the posts and catching up with everyone and hopefully meeting some newbies!
Hang tough newbies.. It's one crazy journey but so worth it on the other side.
Keep Striving!

Great to see your post Colleen. I do need a new pic. Just had to renew my driver's lisence, what a difference. I will see what I can do about updating my pic. Yes, life is busy, way too many hours at work most weeks. I enjoyed a weekend off this weekend. Got out for a dog walk each day, the critters are lovin' it. Mowed the lawn for the first time this spring too.

Topic: RE: Hello, i'm new and preparing for surgery (and a little scared)
Great to have you as a member of the group Tammy. I started the program with the educational group meeting in Feb. and had surgery in Sept. My insurance did require the 6 mo nutritional counselling, (also bcbs and my BMI was 53.) I had RNY sept, 2009 and love the smaller me. All of my co-morbidities are improved.
The recovery was relatively easy, I need to lift at a moments notice for work, work required me to take the full 6 weeks after surgery. I was easily tired for some time after surgery, needed just tylenol for pain after about 7-10 days.
Join the chat sessions on monday evenings for group live support, we visit about what everyone present wants to chat about. Kathy

Topic: Hello, i'm new and preparing for surgery (and a little scared)
Hello everyone, my name is Tammy and I am in the process of going through the 1000 steps to get to surgery. Currently, I am 37 and at the weight of 426 lbs. Currently married with a 2 1/2 year old Skylar. As far as my health, I am pretty healthy with te exception that I have developed diabetes after the pregnancy (yikes). I am looking to have the rny precedure done. Just have a few questions.
1) How long does it take to go through the steps to have the surgery (i have bcbs with a bmi over 50 so I do not have to go though the 6 month supervised weight loss yay). Just to add that I have had, my physical, psych exam, stress test, nutirition &exercise consultation, and blood work.
2) how long did it take to heal after surgery.
why an I doing this? Because I want to be here alot longer. Alot of my friends that are heavy and passing away right and left. Have to get healthy and be here for the fam. Really scared and needing people to talk to about what to expect.

Hi there,
You're doing exactly what I did. If your PCM puts in the referral, PNH will pick it up. Call PNH Bariatric Surgery (it's on the PNH website) a few days later. They will schedule you for an Orientation. At the Orientation, you'll get a number(kind of like waiting in line at the Pharmacy! *Lol*). They say they will call you in about 2 weeks for a first appointment, but it took them a month to call me. In the meantime they will put in for you to get some labs and tests. My first appointment is on May 3. They say there is about 4 appointments you have to go through before they will give you a surgery date. I'm unsure what to expect on my first appointment, but I'll let you know. Hope that's helpful!
