Post-Op Constipation

Hello all! I am new to OH today and have begun my profile but my main problem right now can't wait; I need advice please.

At 6 weeks post-op (Roux En Y), I am feeling sick often.  I have a scope planned for Tuesday because my doctor said I shouldn't still have these problems: mainly nausea from waking to sleeping (little to no vomiting), trouble keeping liquids and my meds down, and bad stomach aches and constipation.

The first two will be discussed after the scope results but my doc said I can use stool softener or laxative for the constipation - she pretty much said any should work.  I have tried both but for the past 2 weeks I am horribly backed up to the point I feel sluggish and exhausted (and lacking in daily calories).

On good days I am full of more energy than I have had in years (I am 50 lbs lighter since my Jan 3rd gastric bypass), so it's a bummer to feel ill when I am so much healthier and want to get out and take the world by storm.

I have always had constipation issues; even more so because of my daily meds.  I had thought this would not be a problem after surgery.

Does or has anyone else had constipation post-op?  Any recommendations for over-the-counter laxatives or natural remedies that have helped?

Welcome to the group.  I have this problem too.  Found that taking miralax with my crystal light helps.  The miralax is over the counter and takes a couple of days to start working.  Has no flavor and doesn't get lumpy in the crystal light.  I have also added benefiber to my crystal light when needed to get the fiber I need to have bowel movements more often, also helps with the constipation issue.    Keep increasing fluids too to help keep the stool softer.

Congrats on your success 50# is amazing.  I hope you get good answers from your scope procedure.  Keep us up to date.

Nice to meet you. I too had a problem pre-op and post-op. Much worse after surgery than before. I use stool softeners 2X's a day' Morning and bedtime. Keeps me in good shape most of this time. Kathy's advice is solid, Keep those fluids in as much as possible. Let us know t6he results of the scope turns out.
Tonight is Monday night chat. It's a great time for people to get together and answer questions or just get to know people better.

Thank you Kathy and Mag.  My scope went very well.  They found that the scar tissue around the connection between my pouch and the intestinal limb attached below it had constricted the food path by half.  They used a balloon to increase the size of the path back to normal.  I instantly felt a change.  I ate lunch and dinner with no problems and was able to take my meds again with water.  I am so glad they solved it so easily.  As for any future constipation, I will take your advice.  Thanks ever so much and I will definitely be at the chat - I had marked it on my calendar.  I am excited to have found this site and your group and look forward to chatting with you all :)

The only produnt that I found that works for me is Natural Calm from Natural Vitality.
It is a magnesium supplement. I take it just before bed. After I mix it I let it sit a little becuase it has a tiny evervesence to it. You can purchase at The Vitamin Shoppe or on Amazon. A little really does alot.
Things get better with time. Just give time Time.

a cup of coffee a day might he;p regulate things too.   I take senna and colace both twice a day.  I do have the miralax but remembering to take the pills is just easier when I can put them in my weekly pill box
