RNY on 01/31/12
My nerves are really kicking my butt. The all clear liquid diet starts tommrow then the bowel prep, let me tell you I am not looking forward to the bowell prep.  Just wondering how bad it hurts when you wake up?  What types of shakes did you find easy to tolerate? How long before you were able to walk comfortablly and sit comfortabilty?

By now you are into your prep for surgery.  Hang in there.  The recovery is different for each of us.  My surgeon had me drinking sugar free carnation instant breakfast with a teaspoon or so of added protein powder both before and after surgery.  I would make up 5 packets of instant breakfast with 5 cups of milk and a scoop of protein powder, mix well and shake before pouring the next serving.  I can't bring myself to have the instant breakfast anymore, 6 weeks of steady diet of it ughhhh.  It work for what was needed, but i am past that now.

Each surgeon is different on the diet they prescribe before and after surgery.  Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers this week as you have your surgery and start the recovery process.

I found things pretty easy after surgery, took my liquid pain meds when I needed and walked frequently.  I was down to liquid tylenol by a couple of weeks out from surgery.  Take it one day at a time, do not over push yourself.  Sip, sip, sip, walk and nap.

I was on a clear liquid diet for 2 weeks prior to surgery and no bowel prep.  Every surgeon is different, which still amazes me.

I was up and moving around 4 hours after I got to my room from the recovery room.  It was a short walk, but it really helped get the air moving and to relieve the pain.  The hardest part was was the getting out of the bed.  Once up it was amazing.  I went 6 hours the 2nd daay without pain meds.  I couldnt sleep flat for about 2 weeks..  I sat in the corner sitting up on my couch.  I took tylenol E.S. liquid during the day and my prn pain meds at night once i got home for the 1st week.

The shakes are different and I will admit that I could not get them down for the 1st 2 weeks.  I would suggest mixing them in less amount of liquids and drink shots at a time.  Also i found that mixing them in FF milk made them taste better,  but I would check with your surgeon.  My surgeon allowed milk, but only in my shakes and small amounts.  Not every surgeon will allow milk.  (dont know why there is so many different rules form one surgeon to the next).
I drank : body fortress (bought at walmart), nectars (ordered online at www.dietdirect.com), carnation SF.   You can also add some plain greek yogurt added to the carnation SF instant breakfast (would add about 13-15g protein) and it would be more like a smoothie.  bariatricfoodie.blogspot.com/ and www.theworldaccordingtoeggface.com both have great ideas for making protein shakes and for making them taste better.  My all time favorite that I use now is 1cup of prepared coffee mixed with 4 oz protein shake (4oz FF milk mixed with chocolate nectars).  Mix both liquids over ice to make an ICED coffee.
