So after getting my date, I started to wonder...

I have heard about the consequences of "Dumping" and then it hit me.  How often does one go to the bathroom after surgery.  I figure if the weight is coming off, it has to come out some way or another.

Could someone let me know?

Dumping is not the normal movement, that is when you are hit by something that your body reacts to badly like too sweet or too greasy foods. Then it leaves you quite soon and not pleasantly, almost like food poisoning, cramping etc.

You will be starting on liquids then soft foods so your first poos will be like baby's more or less soft. After you eat real food at about 4 weeks out you will get "normal".
I do know it's easy to get constipated from not drinking enough or steadily. so Sip sip sip

Cindy gave you the dumping explaination.  It is no fun, like the stomach flu or food poisoning, stuff just sails on through.  I had RNY knowing that that was a possibility.  For a long time after surgery, I thought I could not dump.  But, I can and do and love knowing that I need to behave myself with eating to avoid that reaction.  Yayy wls.

I was very constipated after surgery, your body is used to dealing with a much larger volume of food everyday.  Use stool softeners, fiber as directed by your surgical team.  Taking narcotic pain medication also leads to constipation.  I like generic benefiber, mixes with anything, I use crystal light.  No additional grit or taste.  Miralax also helps for scooting things through your intestine, same thing, no grit or taste.  Check with your surgeon before trying anything.  They have the last say so on what they recommend.

I came home from the hospital 10# heavier than I went into surgery.  All IV fluid weight, took a few days for my body to shift the fluids on out, then the losing started.  Good questions Jaun, keep asking, we will share our experiences.

Hello Juan,

Dumping is terrible! It took me a long time to experience it, It really hurts, very uncomfortable. But if you avoid the normal triggers you will be ok. Stay away from sweets, and high fat content foods.

You will get sick of the protein drinks, after a while they too will make you gag. Try to find a variety so that you can change it up a bit and make it more tolerable. Carnation instant breakfast with dry milk is not so thick and is a good alternative.

Drink, Drink, Drink, should be your motto, small sips all day long, when you get up at night to go the bathroom, drink some more, like everybody has mentioned constipation will  be with you for a while, drinking water and and stool softeners will be a life saver.

Good Luck!
