Artificial Sweeteners making me hungry (pre op diet)??
RNY on 01/04/12
I am still in the approval stage, but I have to lose 25lbs pre surgery. I noticed that since I have been on the diet that if I drink a diet iced tea or something with artificial sweetener in it, I get hungry sooner. I didn't have any today and I stayed fuller today. I know post op I can't have sugar and was curious if you experiance the same thing??? Does anyone use any alternatives??
First, congratulations on the 25 lbs... that's wonderful progress!
I have used artificial sweetner for several years as I have (had now after surgery) diabetes. I never used Sweet & Low because it's saccarin (sp?). I prefer Splenda, Truvia, or Stevia. Purvia is ok but I found I had an aftertaste with it that I didn't like. I never associated earlier hunger with use of a sweetner so I can't say I experienced what you are. I just know that I felt fuller with greater portions of protein and ensuring that any starches I ate are from whole grains/non-white starch. As long as I did that, I didn't have a problem between meals.
Of course, now, post-op, I am focusing on protein and fluid. That will evolve over time but not too much... protein will always be first after fluids and vitamins.
Good journey to you,
Diana

Thanks Diana, you gave me aot to consider!!
Katy, I had been using artifical sweeteners for years due to diabetes. I found that drinking more liquids helped, also switch to a salad size plate and use smaller utensils. Stop eating when satisfied, not when full or the plate is clean. It is one of the habits that we use after surgery.
