I am in the process of being assessed for surgery. I have constant pain from Osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia. I have two concerns.  The big one is will losing weight relieve the pain! Have people found that they keep the weight off?

Welcome to the group pmurray.  I can answer for my own arthritis, my knees, feel amazing with over100# less of me to cart about.  I can only guess that the fibromyalgia should improve too.

As far as keeping the weight off, yes, that will happen.  But only if you retain your newly learned eating habits and do not allow yourself to fall back on old comfort habits of using food to feed issues.  This is a tool to help us with portion control.  I am two years out from wls at this time and love knowing that my tool works.  It is very different listening to your body cues for eating instead of just cleaning your plate.

There are some things that you can do during this assessment time to help start the weight loss.  I found it helpful to switch to a salad size plate,  my eyes saw the same amount of food, based on % of plate coverage and I did not always go back for a refill.  Try to separate drinking fluids from your meal.  We can "wash down" more food and pack it into our stomach with the fluid.  I confess, I had the hardest time separating drinking from my meals before wls.  Separating them is much easier now, not room for both food and fluid in the pouch at the same time.  Yayyyy wls.

Thanks for the encouragement. I think I am just getting nervous the closer I get. I really look forward to less pain.
They have not given me a date yet which doesn't help. i do struggle with not drinking with meals. I find some things like rice or mashed potatoes sometimes stick in my throat. With slowing down and chewing more it seems to be helping.

yes the weight adds to your pain. I have arthitis in my lower back, and it rarely bothers me now.

Mini Gastric Bypass on 10/13/11
Hi,

Welcome to the group. I'm a newbie as well. I had surgery on 10/13/11 (SGB = Sleeve Gastric Bypass sorta like the MGB = Mini Gastric Bypass). I feel when you are lighter in weight you have less pressure on your joint so you will definitely see a difference. Good luck and keep us posted.
