hello all...i have been doing the nutrition classes for 2 months now and will be doing them for 6 months.  however, i have had my first surgeon appointment today.  i was so scared about it thinking that he would deny me before i even had a chance and guess what...was i wrong! :)  he said that i do qualify for the surgery and would need to go about the testing procedures that happen during this stage.  i had my bloodwork today and holy cow do they take a lot of blood.  i have scheduled the chest x-ray and ekg and the psych eval.  now i have to wait for the pulmonary doctor to call me to schedule that appointment.  i am getting to the looking forward for a new life stage in this process.
i do have a problem though.  i have gained almost 10 pounds since i started the nutrition classes and i'm worried.  i am not a great eater or make good choices regarding food.  are you supposed to lose weight while in the classes and should your eating habits change during this time?  i am very alone in this journey and will hopefully get some feedback and make some new friend.
thanks for reading...jenn c

HI Jenn, the idea is to lose weight during this time, learn new eating habits.  Have you tried switching to a salad plate instead of the full size plate?  Are you cooking for yourself or a family?  Is there a support group for your surgeon's office?

There is a spot here on OH for tracking food and activity.  And of course we are here to bounce ideas off from.  Sounds like you are being kept busy with the appointments.  Are you able to exercise?  Keeping a food journal?

Hi Jenn,

I agree with Kathy you have to really try hard to change things before surgery because it is a harder to change things afterwards if you haven't tried to change habits, you don't want to make yourself miserable.  I think you are suppose to try to lose weight but mostly change eating habits and thought patterns of your eating.  I actually lost and then gained some back before surgery and found things out I was doing that I could change through the Nutritionist and even though I didn't lose a lot before surgery it really helped to change things before hand because the liquid diet would have been so much harder then it was had I didn't start making changes.  Good luck to you.
