What will you eat Post-Op???
Hello everyone,
My question isn't regarding right after surgery but further down the road. My surgery (VSG) is scheduled this Wednesday the 13th and I am starting to worry about eating like I am (during liquid diet) for the rest of my life :( I enjoy food but obviously can eat more than needed hence the weight issues but will you be able to eat regular foods after you get past the healing and regular foods as in Steak or Asparagus? things like that something you chew not drink.

I'm still new to the VSG. I am 5 weeks out post op. I start on real foods tomorrow. Meaning I can have chicken, turkey, fish as well as vegies. Your Dr. will give you a guide to follow. Eventually you will be able to eat regular good foods. My guide shows that I can have red meat at six months. Just always check with your Dr. I had my surgery on June 6th 2011. I have been really lucky because I haven't had any problems at all. No nausea no cramps. All the foods I have tried have agreed with me.
Good luck with your surgery and keep us all informed. Don't forget to ask questions questions questions. Make sure you feel comfortable with all the answers before your surgery.

Hi Marcia, welcome to the group. Let me give you an early welcome to the loser's bency.
Yes you will be able to eat real foods after surgery. Just follow the quidelines set by your surgeon for advancing your diet. Know that you will need to comsume protein first, fruits and veggies next and carbohydrates only is you still have room in your pouch.

Thanks Kathy and everyone :)
the 13th is surgery and it's so close. I am scared because you can read all you want about how others have gone through but you don't really know how it will be on the other side till you have done it yourself. And finding out (because of my liquid diet) and my therapist that I am a food addict, never thought I was before. I was a bit scared that I would end up on liquids or soft foods for the rest of my life - I know irrational fears (which is why I see a therapist) but thank you so much for your information it really helps.

Most surgeons have the ultimate goal of us getting all our nutrition from eating real foods. It takes time for our bodies to adjust, do some losing, and us to learn realistic portions. The pouch is our tool. We are not able to tolerated the needed volume of foods during the rapid losing, so supplements of protein shakes are needed for a while.
Any foods that we consume after surgery need to be chewed very well, and will end up soft from the chewing. If there is a food that tends to trigger an eating binge, plan to avoid that food. We do not want to do things that will harm our new tool. Continue to work with yout therapist to address food issues. Find alternate things to do during stress. Make a list of acceptable things to do instead of feed the stress. Read the list, pick something off the list to do, the impulse will pass. Consider putting one suggestion of each of many slips of paper, put the papers into a fun container and draw out a slip of paper with your acceptable suggestion. Then do the activity you drew from the container. Takes you mind of the impulse.
