How to Help Your Spouse Help You?

Hi everyone,
I am coming up for RNY on June 27 and trying to prepare everything.. Convinced my husband that this will be safe and a great step forward.  He is very supportive and wants to help but does not really know what he can do...he is not one to read a lot of the books avaliable unless a short version.  Does anyone know of a resource, web site, guide etc. that is more spouse/supporter oriented could help with the basics of post surgery recovery, food (or no food that is) etc.?
Thanks so much!
Kathy

Hi Kathy!

My best suggestion is "Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies."  Yes, it is a book, but the way it is set up it is a very easy read and you don't have to read it all the way through.  It's a great reference guide and I know I would have been lost without it and this group.

He could also post here if he likes; I for one would be happy to answer his questions if I can and I know there are others that will as well.

Good luck and I look forward to reading your posts and welcoming you to the loser's bench at the end of June!

Kathy,
Sorry this took so long, but my sister, Ellen, said she will be sure to send you a PM by this weekend. Hope all is going well.   Mag

He will just need to remember to be patient!  And remember even if you feel good one day and don't need anything doesn't mean you won't need him the next day.  My 1st month was full of good days and bad days, and it was a full month before I was able to go back to work and make it through a full day.  Best of luck to both of you!

Hi Kathy,
No husband but an awesome sister who has been with me every step of the way. she prepared the drinks/ food that I needed for the stage I was at. She grocery shopped, did dishes and laundry, Made sure I took my meds and supplements. She was so organized and a real blessing. I could have her send you a PM of her experience if you want.  Take care, Mag

i approve apouses getting on here for sharing too. There is also a forum here on OH for caregivers. Sharing at chat times on mondays helps too. I will share with apouses and patients alike. Have your hubby ask any and all questions.

My husband has been very supportive of me in regards to the RNY I had on 5-3.  He went to the pre-op consult, my two post-ops so far, and is planning on attending the classes and support groups I will attend.  If you have a spouse who is supportive of you, your health, and reaching the goals, it's a definite plus!
Honestly, if your surgeon offers classes and support groups, try to have your husband go with you.
