Welcome to the group Tim, checked out your page. I found out about obesity help from my surgical team too. I have had such wonderful support, that I attended training sessions to help others here and locally.
Focus on starting better habits while you are attending the dietician appointments. They will have you journal your foods, bring the journal with you and discuss healthier options. Stop soda pop, smoking and focus on quality proteins. During this time before surgery, try drinking a large glass of water about 30 minutes before a meal to fill your stomach. Focus on chewing each bite 20-30 times and making a meal take 20-30 minutes to finish. Start using a smaller plate for your meal, consider a salad size plate. We tend to fill the plate we use, and by using a smaller plate, your portions will be smaller.
I like to have a protein source for breakfast, yogurt, cottage cheese or an egg are simple options. I keep a variety of healthy foods in the fridge so that I am not tempted by junk. Consider cleaning your cupboards of all non healthy items. It is easier to stick to a plan if unhealthy things are not right at hand.
If you can, attend the monday chat sessions, we usually discuss healthy food options and share experiences. Getting the immediate feedback from peers helps. So glad you joined our group. Hugs

I had a hard time with the eating quickly at first too. Practice putting your fork or spoon down between bites and allowing yourself to really taste the bite you are chewing.
Start reading labels on the foods that you buy, look for serving size, carbohydrates per serving, protein grams per serving. Try to avoid the foods with super high carbohydrate servings. I find that I have my best success from cooking at home and avoiding eating out when possible. I can control the portions, added fats and sugars by cooking myself.
Now that surgery is done, when I do go out to eat, I will ask for a to go container when I get my meal and put most of the meal away. I am not faced with an overwhelming volume of food on my plate, the server doesn't notice that I am picking at the food and try to get me something else (since it appears that I do not like the meal) when I can only put small amounts in my pouch. A restaurant meal can usually feed me at least 3 meals, one at the dining establishment and a couple warmed up later at home.
