RNY and bread
when i try to eat thick bread i feel sick. i guess its thick bread because i can handle toast but not a sandwhich. maybe its just too early. i just wanted to see if anyone else had a hard time with bread in the beginning? i think i might just take this opportunity to cut the habit completely off with bread. its not worth feeling sick over and to be honest doesnt taste as good as it used to. i havent tried a lot of soft foods yet. mostly chicken and green beans
Stop.. LOL.. no breads!.,.. yes some of us can handle some breads, but do not go there yet, and experiment with soft foods before venturing that way.. do not want to get bad habits again, and bread is a carb, avoid avoid right now.. if anything tortilla shells, but I didnt dare that til on reg food.. was highly advised against it. I have tried a little bite here and there recently, and can not eat it like before surgery, it is thicker and has yeast an all kinds of things that swell in our pouches. Have you tried baked fish? unbreaded version? and cooked carrots? and have you read eggface site? so many yummy recipies for our WLS ppl. IF you can handle yogurts and cottage cheese, add them in, gives you the extra calcium your body needs and is yumm I think.. and try smoothies too.. puddings,, etc.. but stay away from breads :) at least foe a while, do not want to hurt your self.
at 1 month out, my NUT said that I could have 1/4 slice of toast with my egg in the morning. Wasn't worth it. SO what I chose to do instead was to have x2 stonewheat crackers with my tuna. I have had a slice of rye bread this week and it stayed down fine. I dont want to get back to eating white bread or to eat bread that often at all. If I am gonna have bread it will be no more than one slice and it will always be wheat or rye.
How far out from surgery are you? I was on clears for 2 weeks, pureed foods for 5 weeks before I was allowed regular foods. That being said, I most often will still chop up my meats. I have been eating fruits now. I do need to start eating some veggies. The only veggies I have been eating is grape tomatoes. I tend to eat 5-6 meals a day.
Breakfast: egg and yogurt
S: protein shake
Lunch: 3-4 oz of protein ( tuna or deli meat)
S: grape tomatoes w/ small amount sald dressing
Dinner: 3-4 oz of protein (chicken or chil)
S: cheese and crackers

wow thats so different than what i am being taught. i only had to do liquids for 1 week and 1 week of purees. i could or should up my snacks. i only eat 2 snacks a day and right now i am on 1/2 cup and 1/4 cup servings. at one month they say i can eat one cup at meals if i can stomach it . i know i wont lose as much as you but i am almost down 30 lbs.
Sara, do your best to avoid carbs, especially white ones for a long, long time. By white carbs, I mean bread, pasta, rice, sugar. These, except the sugar, can swell in your fancy new pouch and cause you distress. Some can tolerate small amounts of well toasted whole grain bread. I find that bread does not settle well in my pouch. I will have a cracker ot two and tolerate that fine.
I learned that for the first 3 months, no more than 1/4 cup of food at a sitting, by 6 months, maybe up to 1/2 cup, then progressing to about a cup of food by 1 year out. Keep in mind 2 bites of protein for every bite of non-protein food when you are eating. Protein, veggie and then a bite or so of carb, only if you still have room after the protein and veggie.
Each and every surgeon has their plan. Just do not overfill your pouch, you will be miserable. If something causes you to feel ill, avoid it. Hugs
