Type 2 Diabetes question

I have a question, maybe someone with Type 2 can answer.
I just found out my sons fathers diabetes is out of control.
He's 50, 300 pounds,  morbidly obese, no exercise, eats whatever he wants, 7 insulin shots daily.
My son is very concerned for him when he goes over there to stay with him because his dad sleeps all the time, doesn't have energy to play with my son (my son is 11), is unemployed so there's no benefits, and no money to take my son anywhere.  It's a tough place for my son to visit every other weekend.

How do I explain this to my son?
How do I explain that his dad is sick?
How sick is his dad?
Will he live a year, two?  Do I have to talk to my son about death?

I've never dealt with diabetes before and don't even know where to begin.
We got a pamphlet from the doc a while back that talked about juvenile diabetes, but my son thought that was for babies, and it kinda was written like that.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Hi, Wish I could help but I know nothing on the subject. I just wanted to say I am thinking of you and your son. Well say a prayer that you find the answers you need.    Mag

Jeannine,  I am concerned about your son's dad too.  I have type 2 diabetes also.  Sounds like the diabetes is waaaaay out of control.  I also wonder if he is having issues with sleep apnea and/or depression.  I suffer from the sleep apnea too.  Before my cpap, I was tired all the time, could drop asleep at the drop of a hat, needed to take a nap for 2 hours just to be able to get through a 3-11 shift at work.

Do an online search for type 2 diabetes for complete symptoms and treatments.  The ADA (American Diabetes Association) has the most up to date info.  There are areas on the ADA site that are geared towards adults and children.  Getting diabetes under control is a combination of diet, exercise and medications.  The most important person in the equation is you son's dad.  He needs to want to make changes and work with his MD to balance the meds/diet/exercise.  He may need to see a mental health specialist too.  I see that he is unemployed, no benefits.  There are programs out there, he just needs to find one.

Hope this helps, I am keeping your family in my thoughts and prayers.  Children need good role models, his dad is not providing a good example at this time.  Wish I had more answers for you.  Keep things simple for your son to understand.  Hugs and prayers
