Hair Loss
Everyone has some hair loss related to surgery, the shock of surgery and anesthesia. We will also have the probability of losing some hair due to the change in our diets. Hair is protein, get in your required protein as able. You will not be able to get in all of the protein for a few days/weeks after surgery. Just do your best.
The supplement biotin (one of the B vitamins) helps to slow some of the loss and speed up the replacement hairs. The hair that you lose will be replaced with new hairs in time.
Stress also affects hair, do not get too worked up about a few strands in the shower or on the brush. Hope you fly through your surgery with minimal hair loss. Have a grand weekend this weekend.

I was right there with you, I was only 26 when I had my bypass, and scared to death I was gonna go bald and loose all my hair if I didn't do everything I needed to do right away. It doesn't fall out in large clumps. At least mine didn't, I would brush my hair and there was more in the brush then normal, but nothing anyone could see on a regular basis. I did have lots of stray hairs on my clothes, carry a lint roller or something to catch it. and If I ran my had threw my hair if would come out. Again not in large clumps. just strains. My hair stylist actually said it helped my hair out alot! I (1 year later) still find from time to time I have some "extra" hair falling out.
I wanted to know if there was anyway to avoid it. But like Kathy said it is the shock of the surgery and the sudden weight loss. Keep up on vitamins and protein. You'll do good
GOOD LUCK TUESDAY! Ill be looking for updates :-)

Starting biotin before surgery can help, or even after surgery. BE SURE to get in all of your protein, as hair is made of protein, and it is what our bodies deem least important to us, so when protein is low, its the hair that doesn't get what it needs. You will experience a little thinning, as the others said due to the anesthesia and trauma and shock, but many people don't lose very much at all if they keep up on the vitamins protein and take biotin. I didn't even take biotin, but lost little. Biotin is a combo of B vitamins so it is not unsafe for you. As a matter of fact, its a good thing.
Now the other thing that is recommended to prevent hair loss is to NOT color or perm your hair until you are about 6 to 8 months out (or when the loss stops). These things are highly damaging, and your hair will already be compromised. And another thing...if you take your vitamins and protein as you should, the hair thinning is NOT permanant. Your lost hair will return as long as you stay healthy.
I too worried about the hair thinning, as i have always had pretty thick hair, but after kids it wasn't as thick, and my mother around my age or younger had very thin hair. I did not want people to be able to see my scalp through my hair! BUT all is fine!
Legit question for sure!
