One week post op!

Went to the doctor today. I lost 13 lbs in one week!!! WooWhoo!!!. I don't think I have weighed 223 in at least 3 years.

I am now off the liquid diet and on puree. Had a feast tonight 1/4 cup of puree chicken and 1/4 cup of puree carrots. It was delicious.!! And so far so good. It appears the stomach liked it too b/c its being tolerated so far.

I couldn't get a straight answer from my doctor though, I wanted to know what was the ideal weight for me. I told her I wanted to get to 125 lbs, all she said as long as I lose weight that is all that matters. ?????? Hello, that is not the answer I was looking for!!. For my height 125 is the weight I should be at but all she said was some people never make it to their ideal weight as long as we lose weight we should be happy. I wonder if they do that on purpose to get us mad and really try all that much harder. I am going to make it to 125 lbs!!

My husband also let me loose today. It was so nice to be out of the house even though it was to go to the doctor and to run errands. He is sure now that I am ok and can go out. So tomorrow, Mall here I come!! So excited to be able to be out walking about.

WTG on the loss.  Love the pureeds!!!  I just had some pureed canned peaches (NSA) and am hoping that my pouch loves them as much as I did.  LOL

My surgeon never even mentioned a goal weight that he wanted me to reach.  Didnt even set one for me.  I set my own goals.  1st goal is to get below 300 pounds (been 6 years).  My big goal is to reach 180.  I am not sure what I should be at according to the charts, but I remember that at 180 I felt good.  Plus that is half what I started.  Will mention this to my surgeon on my next follow up appointment.

I remember how I felt the first time I was out and about.  I savored it.  Overdid it the first time.  Was gone like 6 hours.  Spent 3 of them in the car driving.  I was in bed most of the next day.  So take it easy and dont overdue it.

I am looking forward to going to my sisters the weekend of the 5th.  Its a 4.5 hour  drive.  Thinking that my fiance is actually let me go without HIM.  It would be so nice to have just some girl time.  Dont get me wrong.  I love him dearly.. but u know that a girl needs some girl time... :)

Thanks Fran,

My next goal is to lose 24 lbs in the next 30 days so that when I go to my next appt. I will be under 200 pounds. I will be ecstatic with that. You are doing great as well. Keep up it up!!

After the chat last night and when I finished my phone call. I fell asleep on the couch for about an hour stayed up long enough to drink some milk and went to bed. I was pretty tired, but it was a good tired. I am hoping that after walk at the mall today (It will be a very long walk) I can make it to at least 9 p.m.

That's a long drive to your sisters be careful. Yes I know about the girl time. My husband is attached at the hip all the time since I had the surgery. Love him more then life, but I see I will have to gently detach. He is so afraid something is going to happen to me like passing out or something, but I haven't felt faint at all. Gotta love him.

Well have to jump in the shower so I can motivate.

Congrats to being off to a great start!!

I have to say I find this website amazingly interesting.  I am on here at least an hour a day, my one girlfriend thinks I am obssessed lol!!  I am having my surgery on Monday!! Go**** is so close!!

But what I find the most amazing and I read it here on your post is the difference in what happens with regards to eating from one place to another.  I live in Ontario, Canada, kinda inbetween Toronto and Niagara Falls.  At the hospital my surgery is thru they have a VERY strict program to follow.  Pre-op you go on a liquid diet for usually about 2 or 3 weeks, I'm doing 2 weeks.  Where you drink their Optifast shake 4 times a day and broth or water, surgar free jello or surgar free fruit juice as well.  But post-op I have to be on a high protein low sugar shake and gradually add in other fluids starting with just clear fluids to full fuilds for the first month.  Then puree at 4 weeks post-op.

I find it amazing that you got to have puree at a week out?!?!?!  I am glad to hear your doing so well, it gives me excitement for my up coming day.  Keep up the great work can't wait to read more of how well your doing!!

Take Care

i just wanted to comment on the weight loss goal thing. my nut told me orginially what my goal was... from 359 to btwn 180-200 lbs and im 5 foot 4. later after losing more than 50 lbs and seeing the surgeon his assistant rambled something about 140 or 150 being my goal. huh?? i'd collapse!! ;) we will see what happens. ive never weighed less than 175 in my life and so thats my personal goal. we'll see what happens though. one of them for sure was figuring 75 percent body fat excess loss. so take your numbers and do the math. i had a hard time doing my own math. ;) i was told 25 percent loss at month 1, and 45 percent at month 3. i know not everyone hits these numbers but i sure hope i do! you are doing great! good luck on your journey and keep us informed. i love hearing from you.

My surgeon had them serve me scrambled eggs and oatmeal the morning after my surgery... imagine! I have never heard of another surgeon so liberal. I think i could eat about 2 bites of the egg and was like "I ate too much!" lol

Thanks Teresa,

My husband is Canadian as well from Ontario, Canada his family is from the outskirts of Ottawa. We go visit 3-4 times a year, But never in the winter I am always afraid I will be snowed in up there or on the way home.

I wish you all the luck on your surgery on Monday. Don't be nervous, its not that bad!. It looks like all doctors have a different plan. Yours is so much more strict than mine. I don't think I could have done 2 weeks of liquid diet. Than another 4 weeks after, b/c I have to tell you those protein drinks really are nasty. I am drinking the carnation instant breakfast no sugar added with the dry milk, I can tolerate that.

I will be looking for your posts next week to see how you are doing. Saying a prayer for you that all goes well.

Sam

Sounds like you are doing awesome in the weight loss and recovery department.
Because i care, i do have to ask this: Did your surgeon or nutritionist give you guidelines for the amount of food to eat each sitting? I ask because typically a RNY pt cannot even eat 1/4 cup of anything until about 3 months out. At this point it is usually 1 to 2 oz (1/8 cup) I am very suprised it doesn't create extreme discomfort for you. I am glad it doesn't, but seems like it should.

I initially set a goal weight for 135. Thats what I weighed before child bearing. My surgeons goal for me was 170. He said any less i would be unhappy and unhealthy as i am large boned and muscular. So I compromised with him and told him my goal is to be at a NORMAL BMI, and for my height that was 157 lbs or less.  I teeter between 150 and 155 now, and have for a long time. I was at 148 for about 2 days, bounced back up to the 150 to 155 range. usually right about 150 to 152.

They say most people do not hit goal, because typically RNY helps us lose approx 70% of our excess weight, except in rare cases. Aything above and beyond that in loss is typoically the result of hard work and discipline to control quantity, food choices, and exercise, which we need to have in place for a life time to prevent regain. Now and then tho, there is that person who loses all they want then still cannot stop losing! But this too passes and they can have the same risks of regain if not diligent.

Hugs to you! Congrats on the great weight reduction!

Thanks Patrece,

Yes I did receive a meal plan for the puree diet which I will be on for the next 4 weeks. After reading your reply and Kathy's I had to go back and read it again to make sure I hadn't made a mistake. The meal plan I have calls for 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup of preteen food items 3 times a day. I can have 1/4 cup of protein food and a 1/4 of optional foods such as the puree carrots, mashed banana, sugar free apple sauce. Or I could just have 1/2 cup of the protein food but no optional food. I am suppose to aim for 60-75 grams of protein a day and 64 oz of fluids. I do not feel uncomfortable when eating but then again I take an hour to 1 1/2 hours to eat.

So I did the math and 70% of my weight is only 165 lbs. I am not happy with that. I will see how it goes and maybe change my goal weight from 125 to 140 lbs I am only 5'2  so being short I have to weigh a little less, I don't want to be fighting the scale for the rest of my life so hopefully the next 6 months will dictate which weight I will stick with.

Thanks for caring I appreciate it :)

Naw not the next 6 months. You will lose longer than that. usually at least a year to a year and a half, sometimes 2. It just slows wayyy down at about 6 to 8 months out. It took me until about 2 years out to get to my goal of a normal BMI, but I got there. You can do better than the 70% if you keep your mind set on it.  I think 140 is an excellent goal. Once there, you can always choose to revise if you feel you need to. In the beginning I set my goals to  things like : 25 lbs off, 50 lbs off, below 200 lbs,100 lbs off, then goal weight. I think it is good to have incrimental goals instead of ONE BIG goal.

Must be your surgeon leaves your pouch a bit larger than most surgeons do. If I had eaten that even at 3 months out, I'd have thought i was dying..lol. You are going to do great! stay focused and enjoy the journey!
You are welcome :o)  Hugs!
