2 Days post op and home from the Hospital
Hello Sara,
I can tell you that you do not need to stress or have anxiety about the surgery, but I know that it will not do any good b/c I was told the same thing and I still worried about it. It really isn't that bad.
My surgery was scheduled for 2:15 in the afternoon and I needed to be at the hospital by 12:15. They were running late checking people in so I didn't actually go bac****il 12:45. The prep was only about 30 min. you get into the funky gown and they put the iv in you and they go over your medical history yet again. I have no memory of the operating room. About 15 min before surgery (2:00) I was given Valium through my iv and remember nothing after that.
The next thing I remembered I was in recovery and they were giving me pain meds though I still didn't have any pain. I know they were doing this because they were telling me what they were doing as they were doing it and I was in and out of conscious.
My experience with the surgery was really good (knock on wood). I will give you a bit of advice, don't go crazy buying pj's for the hospital, with the iv it will be difficult to get them on and since they give you blood thinners to prevent blood clots your incision may seep some blood on to them. a nice comfortable loose robe, socks and slippers is all you need and of course underwear, I did put a bra on the 2nd day. I brought 2 sets of pj's and never even took them out of my bag. As soon as I got home I took a shower and put on my pj's. I have been in pj's since I came home on Wednesday.
I had bought some protein shakes, the doctors office recommended low carb slim fast so I had bought 2 boxes (8 cans) vanilla and chocolate and I also bought the carnation instant breakfast no sugar and dry milk. I am so glad I didn't buy more of the slimfast protein shakes cause even though I tasted them before surgery and they were ok, they taste terrible now. I will finish them but not buying anymore. I found the carnation instant breakfast much more tolerable its not as thick. My nutritionist had also given me a sample of baricare, I had that today and that was good. So I will be ordering some more of that.
Everything will be ok, really, don't worry too much about it.

So glad your surgery went great for you! It took me 2 weeks to sleep on my side.
The reason we are supposed to make our meals take 20 to 30 minutes to consume is because that is how long it takes for the full signal to get to our brains. No matter what you are drinking, just take lots of tiny little sips very often.
Welcome to the losers bench! Sorry for my delay in replying, but have been sick as a dog, and also had my first week at college in 21 years on top of being very ill... UGH! But am so glad to know all is well with you. One step at a time. There will be much to adjust to as time goes on. Before ya know it, you'll feel like an ole pro at this!

Patrece,
I hope you are feeling better. Not a good time to get sick on the 1st week of school.
Yes, I learned about the tiny little sips quickly. I think the 1st 2 days even though I was sipping slowly, it was still not slow enough. I have slowed down big time. Yes its been great that I have been able to sleep on my side. I fall asleep quickly but still wake up 2-3 times a night. This morning I was up at 3:30 am. Not that , that is so bad b/c I am a morning person and normally wake up at 4;30-5:00. But when I read people saying they slept alot even at the support meeting everyone was saying they slept alot. I was kinda hoping I would too, but still have not been able.
I go to the doctor on Monday to have the staples taken out. Then I plan to start going the mall to do some walking, even though I walk circles in my house I am sure it not sufficient to tire me out.

Thanks gal. I am on the road to recovery. But my cold is nothing compared to your surgery. I am so glad everything is going so well for you. When you begin walking at the mall, be sure to keep the laps to a smaller area so if you need to stop, you don't have as far to go to get to your car.
The increased activity may help your sleep, may not. I was energized starting at about 4 days post op until about 6 weeks out. Dunno why, but couldn't sleep more than 5 or 6 hours a night, and couldn't nap, and I LOVE my naps..lol go figure
