2 Days post op and home from the Hospital

Just wanted to give everyone an update. I was discharged this morning from the hospital. I can honestly say this surgery went with out any problems it was truly a good experience. The surgery was on schedule, the hospital staff was wonderful. I did not have any issues with sore throat,  or allergies to any medicine. (knock on wood). I took some of the advice I read on here and walked, walked, walked. The first night They had me up at midnight, They wanted me to do one lap around the hall way I did two, I got myself up at 2 am and walked another 3 laps, I then got up at 4 am and walked another 5 laps. I had a hard time getting comfortable in the bed so I just tired myself out by walking. It helped alot to get rid of the shoulder pain. I only had 4 incisions instead of the 5 the doctor said I would have so that was a pleasant surprise. They gave me morphine for pain (it really wasn't that bad) I took it so I could get some sleep. It wasn't until I was taken off the morphine and placed on pill medication (Vicadin) that I could sleep with out feeling a thing. I could only sleep on my back before, once I was taking the Vicadin I could sleep on my side.

I am home now and I have been trying to drink all that I am suppose to but I think I drank too much. When I got home I had 16 oz of propel but only drank 10 oz. Then I had a can of slim fast 11 ounces It took me an hour to drink that but  about 30 min after drinking that I didn't feel so good, I felt nauseous and very full. so I slowed down on the drinking. It seems that you finish one meal and its time for the next one. I just finished having some broth,  I can't drink any more. I am afraid I am going to be sick.

Gas has kicked in so now I have to figure out how I am going to walk now that I am home. I have been strolling from the kitchen to the dining room to the living room down to the family room. The weather for the next few days is going to be snowing and frigid cold so I will not be going anywhere.

I had the surgery and I have to say I have not felt hungry yet. But when I do drink or eat I don't get the full feeling like they  said you would have. I felt full about 30 minutes after I drink the protein drink. Is that how its suppose to feel?

Congratulations and welcome to the losing side of surgery.  Your body will tell you what it wants.  It does take 20-30 minutes for the full feeling to reach our brains.  This is part of the reason for taking the micro small bites and chew, chew, chew some more.  It is hard to make a meal of a couple of tablespoons of food last 20-30 minutes unless you follow that approach.

I am glad to hear that things went well for you.  Getting up and moving soon after surgery is the best thing for recovery.  Now on to getting acquainted with your new pouch and its likes and dislikes.  Hang in there.  Hugs

WELCOME home and WELCOME to the LOSERs BENCH.  Glad that surgery went well.  Glad that you took the advice to walk! walk! walk!  I think I was up at 12mn the first night and then around 3-4am walking as well.  Was hard to really sleep.  When I did, it was only for 3-4 hours.  Except when they had to give me the valium for muscle spasms, then I was knocked out for 6 hours I think.

Sip!Sip! Sip!  It will be hard to get ur fluids in the 1st few days, dont worry too much.  Dont force them down or you will get sick.  If the slimfast made u sick, it may be a bit too heavy for your new pouch.  Try sticking with clear liquids for a couple of days.

Ive finally graduated to sleeping in my bed and eating pureed foods!!!  YEAH!  I am a lil over 2 weeks out now.

Have a good night

Thanks Fran,

I am glad to be at the losers bench. At 4 days post op I got on my scale this morning and it says I lost 8 lbs. wooowhooo. I will not get on a scale again until Monday when I go to the doctor.

Last night I had the carnation instant breakfast with a couple tablespoons of dry milk. That didn't seem as thick as the slim fast but it took me 1 1/2 hours to drink 8 oz. This morning I made a protein smoothie I couldn't fini**** (I was very full and it tasted terrible). So I won't be making that smoothie again.

I have been lucky, I have been able to sleep in my bed since I got home. I was concerned about that. But I get up about 3 times a night. I know if I take the pain meds I could sleep all night but I am not in pain so I don't take them. I also do not take any naps during the day. I never could do that. I was kinda hoping I would but my body is stubborn I guess. Maybe next week when I go to the mall for walks I will be able to.

I go to the doctor on Monday, they pretty much let you go on the puree diet then. I can't wait. besides the broth there isn't anything that is hot to drink. I really want some warm fluids, Its really cold here in Rochester, NY.

Helped hubby make dinner last night it was good to feel useful and I good that I wasn't a bit hungry or had any urges to taste the food as I made it. I have always done that in the past eat as I cook.

Well time for another stroll around the kitchen, living room and dining room table.

Hi, Glad your surgery is over and that you are home. I am also home from the hospital. It will be fun to follow each others progress as we walk our new and improved steps.

I have not felt a hunger or full feeling yet either. I just sip very small sips all day long. If I get up in the middle of the night I take a few sips then too.

I am trying to convince my husband that we should go to the mall so that I can get a good walk in but he is concerned with the weather. It's frigid cold here in Rochester, NY. And lake effect snow is predicted through Monday. So I have to be content to walk around my house until at least Monday. My husband is legaly blind so he doesn't drive, He is concerned if something happens he will not be able to get me back home.

I too take sips of water when I get up at night. I am having a real hard time getting all the liquids in. I didn't understand before surgery how people kept saying they couldn't get their fluids in, I used to say to my self thats kinda silly there is 24 hours in a day. But I get so full just drinking two ounces.

I am battling gas as well, today is alot better. I do not care for that bloated gassy feeling at all, so I walk around my house.

HI Sam,

I live in southern Arizona and have no good excuse for "forgetting to walk" It seems the hardest thing for me to do. But in my defense, I don't like bright sunlight. I know, Whst am I doing in AZ? Long story. I must walk 1st thing in the morning and again before sunset.

No trouble w/ gas yet. Just lucky so far. I'm sure it is coming. Many people I know use Gas-X.

Monday is my dr. visit. I am looking forward to my first weigh-in. I can tell I've already lost weight. I don't have a scale at home. Maybe now I will buy one. lol.

It sounds like you are doing great! I also had a hard time getting the walking in but it was a little easier as I had my surgery in the fall and was able to get outside.  I can't wait for bike riding weather to come back.  It's hard to believe it's almost February already.   6 more weeks and I'll be able to get a little time in on my tricycle!

You will be fine; just keep doing what you're doing.

I am so glad to hear that your surgery went well. I will think about it forever to try to build my self esttem and anxiety down about the surgery and just general worries. what was it like when they took u back to the operating table? when did they give yuo meds to make you sleepy or at least out of it? can u message me and tell me all this and about the set up process and anything else. the more i know the more i can prepare and battle my anxiety and no one talks about the nitty gritty.
